The FIFA World Cup reaches its conclusion on Sunday as two footballing powerhouses battle for the biggest prize in international football. Spain and Argentina have both produced outstanding campaigns to reach the final and we look at the match from a betting angle before settling on a bet.
Spain vs Argentina – Road to the Final
La Rosa began their World Cup run with a frustrating 0-0 draw against Cape Verde before responding in fashion with a dominant 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia. They completed the group stage unbeaten by edging past Uruguay 1-0 to finish top of their group.
Their Round of 32 clash against Austria proved to be another comfortable outing as Spain secured a convincing 3-0 victory to advance into the Round of 16. They were then handed a difficult test against Portugal but produced another solid performance to claim a hard fought 1-0 victory and book their place in the quarterfinals.
Spain continued their impressive run by defeating Belgium 2-1 in the quarterfinals to reach the last four.
They then produced another composed outing in the semifinals, defeating France 2-0 to book their place in the World Cup Final. Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute before Pedro Porro doubled Spain’s advantage in the 58th minute to send the side into the tournament showpiece.

Argentina
They kicked off their World Cup campaign with a dominant 3-0 victory over Algeria before following that up with a professional 2-0 win against Austria. They completed another perfect group stage by defeating Jordan 3-1 to finish top of their group with a maximum nine points.
Their Round of 32 encounter against surprise package Cape Verde proved far more competitive than expected. Argentina established control early but were pushed throughout before eventually securing a narrow 3-2 victory to progress into the Round of 16.
Argentina were then given another stern examination by Egypt in the Round of 16. In another high quality attacking display, the reigning South American champions once again found enough quality in the closing stages to emerge with a narrow 3-2 victory and advance to the quarterfinals.
Their quarterfinal clash against Switzerland developed into another dramatic encounter. Alexis Mac Allister gave Argentina an early lead in the 10th minute before Dan Ndoye levelled matters midway through the second half. With the scores still locked after 90 minutes, extra time was needed and goals from Julian Alvarez in the 112th minute and Lautaro Martinez deep into stoppage time sealed an impressive 3-1 triumph and another World Cup semifinal appearance.
Argentina booked their place in the final after a dramatic 2-1 victory over England in the semifinals. Anthony Gordon gave England the lead in the 55th minute before Enzo Fernandez restored hope in the 85th minute. As extra time appeared certain, Lautaro Martinez struck in second half stoppage time to complete a remarkable comeback and send Argentina into another World Cup Final.
Head-to-Head
Spain have enjoyed the better record in recent meetings between the two nations, winning four of the previous six encounters compared to Argentina’s two victories. Their most recent meeting came in an international friendly in 2018 where Spain produced a stunning 6-1 victory, while Argentina’s most recent success over Spain came in a 4-1 friendly victory in 2010.

Verdict
Both nations have enjoyed exceptional tournaments and fully deserve their place in the final. Spain have been one of the standout defensive sides throughout the competition, conceding just one goal in seven matches while keeping six clean sheets. Argentina have once again demonstrated their outstanding attacking quality, scoring at least two goals in every match (including extra time) and showing tremendous character to come through a series of difficult knockout fixtures. With Spain combining defensive solidity with excellent balance throughout the tournament, they look well positioned to edge what promises to be a closely contested final and lift the FIFA World Cup trophy although I believe this may go well past the 90 minute point.
Some betting angles I am mulling over:
- Spain win at 2.35
- Spain to lift the trophy at 1.63
- Correct Score 0-0 at 8.00
- Match result and over/under 2.5 goals, Spain and under 2.5 goals at 4.50
BET: Spain win at 2.35
