Egypt host South Africa in an international friendly at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday, 4 October. Both sides have made unbeaten starts to their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaigns, and we take a closer look at the match from a betting angle.
Egypt
Egypt opened their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a disappointing goalless draw at home to Angola in a match where they started as 1.33 favourites.
They were then away to South Sudan, where they held a narrow 1-0 halftime lead before pulling clear in the second half to secure a convincing 5-0 victory.
The result moved Egypt to the top of Group B after the opening two rounds of qualifying.
There remains some uncertainty over whether Mohamed Salah will feature in this friendly. He missed the trip to South Sudan because of concerns over the artificial playing surface, although Egypt coach Hossam Hassan indicated that he would return to the squad for this match.
South Africa
South Africa started life under Pitso Mosimane with a hard-fought 2-1 home victory over Guinea.
Bafana Bafana then remained in Egypt to face Eritrea on neutral ground earlier in the week and delivered an impressive performance.
Relebohile Mofokeng scored twice to give South Africa a 2-0 halftime lead before they added three more goals in the second half to complete a commanding 5-0 victory.
South Africa currently top Group D after collecting six points from their opening two qualifiers.
Head-to-Head
The sides last met at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where Egypt secured a 1-0 victory through a Mohamed Salah penalty.
Before that, they met twice in the African Nations Championship qualifiers in March 2025. The first leg in South Africa finished in a 1-1 draw before Bafana Bafana produced an impressive performance to win the return match 3-1 in Egypt.
Five of the last six meetings between the countries across all competitions have produced two goals or fewer.

Verdict
While this is an international friendly, both teams will want to maintain the momentum they have built during the opening two rounds of Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.
Egypt have home advantage and deserve to start as favourites, but South Africa will arrive with confidence after scoring seven goals across their first two matches under Pitso Mosimane. Mosimane though has indicated he will be making wholesale changes to the South Africa squad, giving some of the younger players a chance to stake their claim.
Historically, matches between these countries have tended to be tight and low-scoring, with five of the last six producing no more than two goals. There appears to be less between the teams than the match betting suggests, and the draw looks to offer value at 3.50.
The 1-1 correct score is another option worth considering. While betting is not currently available, I am expecting a price of around 6.50 and will consider taking the bet on Sunday.
BET: Draw at 3.50
