URC Round 16 Betting Preview

Round 16 of the United Rugby Championship brings another pivotal weekend with just three rounds remaining and the race for the top 8 playoff spots intensifying. The South African sides are mostly firmly in the mix, with key clashes that could shape the final standings.

FRIDAY

Edinburgh v Sharks — Click here to bet

Edinburgh’s season continues to unravel. A scrappy 31-30 URC home escape against Zebre last week is their only win in five across all competitions, following a 49-31 loss against Leinster in the European Rugby Champions Cup. Other URC results saw a 14-33 loss at the Stormers, a 17-54 hammering at the Lions, and a 19-40 defeat at home to Ulster.

The Sharks are patchy, they went down 17-21 at the Ospreys last weekend and lost 12-29 at Connacht in the Challenge Cup, but before that they demolished Munster 45-0 and beat Cardiff 21-15 both at home in the URC.

Head-to-Head

The Sharks have won four of the last five head-to-heads. Most recently they edged Edinburgh 18-17 in Edinburgh in April 2025, before that they won 36-30 at home in the Challenge Cup. Other results in the URC were 23-13 at home in March 2024, and 22-19 at Edinburgh in January 2023. Edinburgh’s only win was a 21-5 triumph at Kings Park back in March 2022.

Betting and Verdict

The Sharks are 1.49, Edinburgh 3.00 with the draw 23.00.

The handicap is Sharks −3.5 at 1.87.

Edinburgh have won just once in five and the Sharks own this fixture, with four wins from five, including two at Edinburgh. Covering 3.5 on the road looks very manageable.

Suggested Bet: Handicap, Sharks [−3.5] at 1.87

SATURDAY

Stormers v Glasgow Warriors — Click here to bet

Last weekend’s 24-33 home defeat to Connacht was a reality check for the Stormers, ending a run of three straight home wins in the URC, 33-14 over Edinburgh, 29-21 against the Dragons, and a commanding 32-19 victory away at the Bulls.

Glasgow sit top of the table on 55 points but arrive under a cloud after a 12-54 mauling at the Lions last week and a 19-22 Champions Cup exit at home to Toulon. Before those setbacks, they had been outstanding, beating the Bulls 25-21 in Europe, Benetton 31-10, and Leinster 38-17 at home.

Head-to-Head

Here’s the stat that jumps off the page: Glasgow have won the last five meetings. They won 36-18 at Scotstoun in May 2025, 28-17 in Cape Town in October 2024, 27-10 at home in June 2024, 20-9 in November 2023, and 24-17 in January 2023. The Stormers simply cannot crack the Warriors.

Betting and Verdict

The Stormers are 1.38, Glasgow 3.50 with the draw 23.00.

The handicap is Stormers −6.5 at 1.91.

Despite Glasgow’s poor recent form, a five-match winning streak over the Stormers, including a victory in Cape Town, makes the handicap very tempting in a game where I am expecting them to be at full strength.

Suggested Bet: Handicap, Glasgow Warriors [+6.5] at 1.91

Lions v Connacht — Click here to bet

Ellis Park has been a fortress this season. They prevailed 54-12 over Glasgow last week, 42-26 against the Dragons, 54-17 over Edinburgh, 24-10 against the Stormers, and 34-22 over the Sharks.

Connacht, though, arrive riding a wave after four wins from five, headlined by that superb 33-24 away win at the Stormers last weekend. Before that they beat the Sharks 29-12 in the Challenge Cup and in the URC, the Ospreys 21-14 at home and won 26-19 at Ulster, with their only slip a 22-45 defeat at Montpellier in the Challenge Cup.

Connacht are 9th but could jump over the Lions in 4th here with a bonus point win which gives a good indication of just how tight things are and the importance of this game.

Head-to-Head

The Lions won the last two, 26-7 at Ellis Park in April 2025 and 38-14 away in Galway in March 2024, but Connacht won 43-24 at home in January 2023 and, crucially, 33-30 at Ellis Park in April 2022, proving they can win in Johannesburg.

Betting and  Verdict

The Lions are 1.16, Connacht 6.00 with the draw 41,00.

The handicap is Lions −11.5 at 1.83.

The Lions home form is devastating but Connacht have won at Ellis Park before and arrive with four wins from five. Against a side in this kind of form, 11.5 is a big number to cover.

Suggested Bet: Handicap, Connacht [+11.5] at 1.95

Scarlets v Bulls — Click here to bet

A wretched run for the Scarlets continued with a 24-28 home loss to Cardiff last weekend, their fourth defeat in five. They were thumped 19-36 at Leinster and 14-31 at Connacht, with their sole recent win a 36-17 home victory over bottom-placed Zebre.

The Bulls demolished the Dragons 47-7 away last week and have been strong domestically, edging Munster 34-31 and thrashing Cardiff 40-7 at Loftus, with their only blemishes a 21-25 Champions Cup exit at Glasgow and a 19-32 home defeat to the Stormers in the URC in March.

Head-to-Head

There is an intriguing pattern here: the home team has won every recent meeting. The Scarlets won 23-22 at Parc y Scarlets in October 2024 and 37-28 there in January 2023, while the Bulls won 63-21 and 57-12 at Loftus.

Betting and Verdict

The Bulls are 1.20, the Scarlets 5.50 with the draw 31.00.

The handicap is Bulls −11.5 at 1.95.

The H2H home trend is a concern, but the Scarlets have just lost at home to Cardiff (after buildinga  handy lead) and sit 14th in the table. The Bulls’ quality should be too much.

Suggested Bet: Handicap, Bulls [−11.5] at 1.95
