The 2026 FNB Varsity Cup Final sees UP-Tuks host NWU Eagles in what is a fitting decider between the top two teams from the league phase and we take a look at the match-up from a betting angle.
Season Overview
UP-Tuks finished top of the standings with 31 points, narrowly ahead of NWU Eagles on 28 points, and both sides have been clear standouts throughout the competition.
UP-Tuks’ points difference of +133 highlights their dominance across the season, while NWU’s +80 reflects their consistency. Given the league standings, this final has a strong sense of inevitability about it with the two best teams over the campaign now meeting with the title on the line.
SEMI-FINAL RECAP
UP-Tuks produced a strong performance in their semi-final, beating UJ 53–34 at home. While it was a good win they had started -25.5 on the handicap with the bookies and they started slowly with UJ very much in the game up until the final 15 minutes.
NWU Eagles were more emphatic, dismantling Maties 50–10 in Potch, with a dominant 2nd half display. That result would have sent a strong message heading into the final, particularly given Maties’ pedigree in playoff rugby.
UP-TUKS vs NWU EAGLES – Click here to bet
This final has all the ingredients of a classic. UP-Tuks bring power, structure, and home-ground advantage, while NWU offer attacking threat and proven ability to win under pressure.
UP-Tuks will likely look to impose themselves early and use their forward dominance to control territory, while NWU will be comfortable playing a more open, high-tempo game.
The key battle could well be around game management and UP-Tuks tend to control matches well at home, while NWU thrive in broken play and high-scoring contests.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
These two sides met during the league phase in a high-quality encounter, with NWU Eagles beating UP-Tuks 30–22 in Potch.
That result will give the visitors confidence, but home ground advantage means UP-Tuks are currently (and are likely to start) slight favourites.

Verdict
UP-Tuks have been unbeaten at home this season and will play in front of a sold-out stadium. As strong as they have been though I get the feeling they may have peaked a few games back and their win over UJ in the semi-final was not as dominant as the scoreline suggests and 2 weeks before they battled past Emeris winning by 3 points in Pretoria in a game where they started 35 point favourites.
The Eagles made short work of Maties in the semi-final and have beaten UP-Tuks this season. I feel they are peaking at the right time and as slight underdogs are the bet here.
BET: NWU Eagles win at 2.20
