After last weekend’s drama at Shinnecock Hills, the PGA Tour stays in the north-east this week for the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. The Travelers is one of the eight signature events on the schedule, with no cut, an elevated purse and the full strength of the Tour’s top players in attendance. After the brutal test the US Open put them through, expect this week’s setup to be a far more inviting birdie-fest. We preview the week from a betting angle and lay down a few suggested bets.
The Course
This week’s PGA Tour action heads to TPC River Highlands, a Pete Dye design that has hosted the Travelers Championship for almost four decades. The par-70 layout measures a relatively short 6,844 yards, (6,258 meters) with five par-4s under 400 yards and a back nine that traditionally produces fireworks on Sunday afternoon, especially around the famous risk-reward 15th and 17th holes. The fairways are generously sized, the rough is moderate, and the bentgrass greens are some of the smoothest and most receptive on Tour. After the brutal Open setup at Shinnecock, this is essentially the polar opposite, a course that almost dares the field to make birdies and that consistently produces winning scores in the 20-under range.
From a betting angle, the data could not be clearer at TPC River Highlands, approach play decides everything. With the course short enough that the World’s best can wedge or short-iron into most greens, strokes gained on approach has historically been the strongest predictor of success here, with strokes gained tee-to-green also worth heavy weighting. Putting on these pristine bentgrass surfaces matters too, but a player who is dialled in with his irons can rip the course apart. Look for sharp iron players in good form with hot putters, and recent course history is a useful tiebreaker too.
Market Leaders
Scottie Scheffler is the favourite at 5.00 in a wide-open market, with the World Number one a deserving choice given his remarkable run of recent results. Tommy Fleetwood is 15.00 and he is followed by Xander Schauffele at 17.00 as the next-shortest prices, with Ludvig Åberg next at 19.00. Cameron Young and Matt Fitzpatrick round out the top of the board at 21.00 and 23.00 respectively. With no overwhelming favourite at the top and a course history of producing the occasional surprise winner, this looks like a week where value can be found further down the list.

Matt Fitzpatrick at 23.00
Although no non-American has won the Travelers since 2016, that run will eventually come to an end, and I think Matt Fitzpatrick could be the man to do it. The Englishman has already secured three wins this season namely the Valspar Championship, the RBC Heritage, and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside his brother Alex. He comes into this week off the back of a 22nd-place finish at the US Open last weekend and a runner-up at the Canadian Open the week before. The more important factor, though, is his stats: Fitzpatrick is ranked top 3 on Tour for strokes gained tee-to-green and 1st for strokes gained on approach this season, exactly the two metrics that matter most at TPC River Highlands. We saw the irons working at the Canadian Open on a course that played similar to this one. I really like him at 23.00 to end the American streak and my only concern is that he is mentally ready after fading over the weekend in the US Open.

Wyndham Clark at 36.00
Our next pick is purely down to form. The 2026 US Open winner showed remarkable composure last weekend as he held onto his six-shot lead at Shinnecock to claim his second US Open title by a single shot. The two-time major winner was already in flying form leading into the major, finishing T11th at the Canadian Open the week before, 3rd at the Memorial Tournament and winning the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, all within the space of four weeks. Clark’s last two finishes at the Travelers Championship also read encouragingly, 17th and 9th place. Players often come back to earth a touch the week after a major, but with the form Clark is in I think it is going to be very hard to stop him at 36.00.

Scottie Scheffler at 5.00
Scheffler hasn’t won a tournament since January, which is unusual for the world Number One, but he has been in contention in just about every event he has played. His last six results read, T4th, T12th, 3rd, T14th, runner-up and runner-up again. Scheffler’s record at the Travelers is just as impressive, T6th last year, a win in 2024, 4th in 2023 and T13th in 2022. It is only a matter of time before he gets back to the winner’s circle, and after his disappointment at Shinnecock last weekend I think we will see a fired-up Scheffler ready to tear TPC River Highlands apart.
