South Africa and Australia meet in the final game of their three match ODI series on Wednesday the 30th of September at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. The Proteas have already secured the series after winning the first two matches and we take a closer look at the series finale from a betting perspective below.
SERIES RECAP
South Africa won the 1st ODI by 67 runs in Durban. Batting 1st they scored 297/8 before bowling Australia out for 230.
Australia won the toss and elected to field first at the Wanderers in the 2nd ODI on Sunday and Josh Hazlewood struck with the first ball of the match, dismissing Aiden Markram for a duck. Thereafter, Quinton de Kock made 15 runs before Matthew Breetzke joined captain Temba Bavuma to steady South Africa’s innings.
Breetzke scored 34 from 28 balls but it was Bavuma’s partnership with David Miller that put the Proteas in control. They added 156 for the fourth wicket, with Bavuma making 103 from 116 deliveries and Miller attacking the Australian bowling throughout the second half of the innings.
Miller struck 142 from 93 balls, including 12 fours and 9 sixes. Duan Jansen added an extra 27 as South Africa reached 365/9, scoring 100 runs in the final ten overs. Jack Edwards was Australia’s leading bowler with 5-67, while Hazlewood claimed three wickets.
Australia again made a rapid start to the chase. Mitchell Marsh struck 84 from 53 balls and shared a 130 run opening stand with Travis Head. Head went on to make 84 from 76 deliveries, leaving the visitors well placed at 191/2 in the 25th over.
South Africa regained control by removing Head, Alex Carey and Matt Renshaw as the required rate climbed. Xavier Bartlett kept Australia in contention with 50 from 28 balls, but the visitors were bowled out for 333* with one ball remaining.
Lizaad Williams claimed three wickets, while Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin took two apiece and Miller was named Player of the Match.

South Africa 2.00
Draw 101.00
Australia 1.87
South Africa are still slight underdogs despite winning the 1st 2 ODI’s but this is the shortest they have been. This is a dead rubber so I would not be surprised to see changes made from both teams and I am going to sit the match result out and will focus on the alternative markets on offer.
SUGGESTED BETS
Mitchell Marsh to Score 50+ Runs at 2.80
Mitchell Marsh has passed 50 in both matches, striking 60 from 36 balls in Durban and 84 from 53 at the Wanderers. His aggressive starts have put South Africa’s bowlers under pressure, and I fancy his chances of reaching another half century in Potchefstroom.
Top South Africa Bowler – Keshav Maharaj at 4.50
Keshav Maharaj has taken six wickets across the first two ODIs, including four in Durban and two at the Wanderers. His spells have helped South Africa regain control after Australia’s fast starts. I expect Australia to try and go after him early in Potch and that will hopefully open up wicket taking opportunities.
