Mamelodi Sundowns secured their quarter-final place with a narrow 1-0 home victory over Marumo Gallants. Siyanda Ndlovu scored the only goal after 20 minutes, giving the hosts an advantage they maintained for the remainder of the contest.
Sundowns were unable to add to their first-half breakthrough but kept Gallants scoreless to complete the job inside regulation time. Another home fixture now gives them the opportunity to move a step closer to lifting the trophy.
Sundowns have now gone 13 matches unbeaten across all competitions (Arrows were the last team to beat them) and on Saturday they eased past Durban City 4-1 in the PSL.
Golden Arrows produced a dominant opening round performance, beating Chippa United 4-0 at home. Junior Dion opened the scoring in the 10th minute before Sabelo Sithole doubled their advantage after 23 minutes.
Arrows carried that two goal cushion into the interval before adding further goals through Nhlanhla Zwane and Jerome Karelse in the 83rd and 85th minutes. Four different scorers and a clean sheet gave them an encouraging start to their cup campaign ahead of this tougher assignment.
That match was their only win in their last 7 though and they went down 1-0 away to AmaZulu in the PSL on the weekend.
Head-to-Head:
Sundowns have won 3 of the last 6 meetings, with Arrows claiming 2 victories and the remaining encounter ending level. Their latest clash brought a 2-1 away victory for Sundowns in the Premiership in September.
The sides also met in the MTN 8 semi-finals in August. Arrows won the first leg 1-0 away before Sundowns responded with a 3-2 victory in the return fixture. Notably both teams have scored in 4 of their last 6 meetings.

Verdict:
Arrows’ four goal opening round victory gives them reason to approach this tie positively, while their recent win over Sundowns shows they are capable of troubling the favourites. The hosts remain the likelier winners but their narrow success against Gallants leaves the home price offering limited appeal.
Recent meetings make the goals market more attractive. Three of the last six matches have produced at least three goals, including Sundowns’ last two victories over Arrows. With the visitors arriving after a convincing attacking display, I am backing over 2.5 goals.
