ARSENAL vs COVENTRY CITY
Arsenal go into the new campaign as defending Premier League Champions after finally ending a 22-year wait for the title last season. The Gunners finished top of the table with 85 points from 38 matches recording 26 wins, 7 draws and 5 defeats while scoring 71 goals and conceding just 27.
Arsenal have already enjoyed a strong start to their preparations for the new campaign. They then opened pre-season with a 4-1 victory over Girona before suffering narrow defeats against Real Betis and Borussia Dortmund. They then responded with a 2-1 victory over Como before facing Manchester City in the Community Shield, where they produced an emphatic 3-0 victory in Wales last weekend.
Coventry City secured promotion to the Premier League by winning the Championship last season, finishing top of the second tier with an impressive 95 points from 46 matches. They recorded 28 victories, 11 draws and just 7 defeats while netting 97 goals and allowing 45 to breach the keeper.
The side have looked sharp in their recent friendlies and appear confident heading into top flight. They began their latest run of fixtures with a 0-0 draw away to Northampton before producing consecutive victories over Espanyol and Monaco, winning 3-1 and 2-0, respectively.
Head-to-Head:
Arsenal have dominated this fixture historically and have won five of the last six meetings between the sides, with Coventry claiming one victory. The most recent encounters came in Cup competitions, with Arsenal recording a 4-0 FA Cup victory in January 2014 and a 6-1 Capital One Cup win in September 2012.
The long gap since the sides last met competitively means the historical record carries limited weight but Arsenal’s overall advantage is clear.

Verdict:
Arsenal appear to have been handed an excellent opportunity to begin their title defence with three points and the recent 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City should only add to their confidence. They finished last season with the best defensive record in the Premier League while also possessing considerable attacking quality and Emirates should provide a difficult environment for Coventry to handle.
I am expecting Coventry to compete for periods of the match, but Arsenal’s overall quality should be the deciding factor. With the side capable of creating plenty of chances and Coventry having demonstrated their own attacking threat during their promotion campaign, there could also be opportunities for a higher scoring contest and for that reason I am also looking towards the totals market.
Here are some betting angles I am considering
- Correct Score 4-1 at 17.00
- Match Result and Both Teams to Score, Arsenal and YES at 3.40
- Arsenal to Win and Over 3.5 Goals at 2.50
- Asian Handicap, Arsenal -2.5 goals at 2.45
BET: Arsenal to Win and Over 3.5 Goals at 2.50
