LIV Golf hits South African shores for the first time this week when players take to the Steyn City course for four rounds of action. It promises to be a totally different experience for the South African golf fan although one common characteristic with other tours is that you can bet on the outcome and many other markets over the course of the Tournament.
Format and Field
LIV Golf is now played over 72 holes having started at 54 hole Tournaments.
There is plenty of quality at the top of the betting boards with major winners, Jon Rahm (4.20) and Bryson DeChambeau (8.00) both in excellent form having won the last two events in Singapore and Hong Kong between them.
A lot of the talk this week is about whether the organizers with the South African teams input have been able to “DeChambeau proof” the course and listening to the players I really have no idea of what to expect in a winning score, with some saying birdies will flow while others comment on the thick kikuyu rough.
In LIV Golf all players tee off at the same time on different holes so in that sense it is a much shorter format for viewers and punters and there will be plenty of energy in the crowd and the 17th hole or “Party Hole” as it has been dubbed is one that the traditional golf connoisseurs had best avoid.
The South African contingent will be led by Dean Burmester, priced at 17.00. Burmester has been in excellent form, cracking the Top 10 in his last three starts without really threatening to win. Other South Africans who will be hoping to challenge include Louis Oosthuizen at 31.00, Branden Grace at 36.00 and Charl Schwartzel at 67.00.

SELECTIONS
Dean Burmester, Top South African at 2.30.
The 36 year old Burmester is playing some of the best golf of his career and when compared to his three South African rivals he does appear to be on an upward projectory and I agree with the betting that he is a firm favourite in this market.
Tournament Winner, Dean Burmester at 17.00.
At the risk of repeating myself, Burmester looks the South African most likely to challenge and although he will find it hard to topple the likes of Rahm and DeChambeau, he will have plenty of crowd support and the advantage of local conditions.
Elvis Smylie each way at 36.00.
The Australian is a player I labelled as having a bright future and I was unaware until recently that he is plying his trade on the LIV Tour. He beat Jon Rahm in LIV Golf Riyadh a few weeks back and although his form has dipped a bit since then, I think he will thrive in South African conditions and he has had experience here, having played in the Nedbank Golf challenge before.
Laurie Canter each way at 141.00.
The 36 year old Englishman hasn’t been in the greatest of form, but he has shown signs that his game is coming to hand and is a player I followed quite closely early in his career. His Top 5 finish price is 22.00 and if you want to take a more conservative strategy you can back him for a Top 10 at 8.00.
Remember that there will be in-running betting as well as betting available on each round including Match Bets, which pits players up against each other.
