Turffontein Best Bets: Race-by-Race Preview
Let’s get stuck into Saturday’s 10-race programme, with our selections and horses to keep an eye on.
Race 1 – NO SELECTION
No official selection for the opening race.
Race 2 – NO SELECTION
We’re passing on the second race as well.
Race 3 – CATFISH – NEXT BEST BET
Jockey: Blaine Marx-Jacobson
Trainer: Fabian Habib
Catfish is an improving three-year-old who appears to be thriving at present. He has been making good progress and looks capable of defying his revised rating. He gets the nod as our Next Best Bet on the card.
Race 4 – FLOWER ISLAND
Jockey: Callan Murray
Trainer: Mike and Mathew de Kock
Flower Island is lightly raced and still has plenty of room for improvement. She showed her ability when winning the Grade 2 Spring Challenge over 1,450m last time and can follow up with another strong performance.
Race 5 – FISH TALES
Jockey: Callan Murray
Trainer: Mike and Mathew de Kock
Fish Tales arrives with a quality piece of form after winning the Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes last time out. Now part of the powerful de Kock stable, this runner deserves plenty of respect on his return to action.
Race 6 – INTO DANCING – EACH-WAY VALUE
Jockey: Blaine Marx-Jacobson
Trainer: Stuart Pettigrew
Into Dancing has been in excellent form, winning four of her last five starts. She produced an impressive performance last time and looks capable of staying on strongly once again. At what could be a decent price, she makes plenty of appeal as an each-way selection.
Race 7 – MALMESBURY MISSILE
Jockey: Tristan Godden
Trainer: Justin Snaith
Malmesbury Missile, owned in partnership with World Sports Betting, has a wide draw to overcome but should not be dismissed.
Trainer Justin Snaith acknowledges that his runner will need luck in running. The plan is to settle him early, find cover and make a late challenge. His competitive weight and expected suitability to the Turffontein course are positives, and he could finish strongly if things fall his way.
Race 8 – CURIOUS GIRL – BEST BET
Jockey: Callan Murray
Trainer: Mike and Mathew de Kock
Curious Girl is our standout selection of the afternoon. She is unbeaten in two appearances at Turffontein, is suited to the distance and should strip fitter for her latest outing.
With course form and conditions in her favour, she looks the one to beat. She’s our Best Bet of the Day.
Race 9 – IMMEDIATE EDGE
Jockey: Callan Murray
Trainer: Mike and Mathew de Kock
Immediate Edge returns after a lengthy break, having last been seen finishing well down the field in the Durban July. There is no question about his ability, and if he is fit enough on his return, he could make his presence felt.
Race 10 – DOG IN THE FOG
Jockey: Callan Murray
Trainer: Mike and Mathew de Kock
Dog In The Fog made a winning start to his career, scoring impressively on debut. He could be much better than his opening rating suggests, so it will be interesting to see how he progresses. One to keep firmly onside.
