The DP World Tour heads to Madrid this week for the Open de España, one of the oldest and most prestigious events on the European calendar. Played at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, the tournament has a strong tradition of rewarding local talent, and with a number of Spanish players in the field and plenty of home support expected, this week promises to be a great watch.
With a strong field assembled and the season moving towards its closing stretch, there is a lot to play for, and several players arrive with recent form worth backing. With a mix of in-form players, home favourites and recent winners all in the mix, here is our full betting preview for the week.
Course
The Open de España is played over the Negro (Black) course at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, a par 71 designed by Javier de Arana and opened in 1956. It is a hilly, tree-lined layout with frequent elevation changes and sloping, doglegging fairways. The fairways are generous on the front nine before tightening up on the back, which makes driving accuracy at a premium over sheer distance off the tee. From a betting perspective, that tends to favour straight hitters who can keep the ball in play and give themselves looks at birdie.
Scoring opportunities are there for those who find the fairways. The course has three par 5s that are reachable in two, and several par 4s that can be attacked with a drive and a wedge, while the undulating greens are well protected by bunkers, so a sharp short game is important. Winning scores in recent years have ranged from 14 to 25 under par, and three of the last five editions have gone to a playoff, so the tournament can come right down to the wire. Look for players who can take advantage of the scoring holes and still hold it together coming down the stretch, as the winner is often the one who makes the fewest mistakes on the closing holes.

Ludvig Aberg heads the market as the clear favourite at 8.50, with Shane Lowry next best at 19.00. The two Spaniards, Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra and David Puig, are both at 21.00 and will have plenty of home support behind them, while Patrick Reed is at 23.00. Alex Noren and defending champion Marco Penge complete the top of the betting at 26.00. With Aberg a fair way clear of the rest, the market is wide open behind him, which makes the each-way prices further down the list particularly interesting this week.

SELECTIONS:
Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra 21.00
Our first pick this week is a Spaniard. In the last seven Open de Espana, the winner has been a Spaniard on five occasions. The first Spaniard we are choosing this week is Chacarra. He comes into this week off the back of a solid run of form. He finished tied third at the French Open two weeks ago after a solid 21st place finish at the BMW PGA the week prior. Chacarra also had a really good tournament at the European Masters at the start of September finishing in fourth place. If he can carry this momentum I think we could see something special in front of the home fans.
Suggested bet: Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra each way at 21.00.
Alex Noren at 26.00
The veteran has been on a strong run of form over the last few months. The Swede is coming off the back of a 23rd place finish at the Dunhill Links Championship last weekend and a fifteenth place finish at the BMW PGA Championship the week prior. These were his first two events since returning from the PGA Tour where he finished 37th at the BMW Championship and 3rd at the FedEx St Jude Championship.
Suggested bet: Alex Noren each way at 26.00
Jayden Schaper at 56.00
Schaper is our outside shot for this week after two solid results at the 2025 and 2024 Spanish Open. Last year he finished 5th while back in 2024 he managed a 9th place finish as a youngster. Schaper got off to an extremely hot start this season winning back-to-back tournaments and will be looking to add a third as we near the end of the season.
Suggested bet: Jayden Schaper each way at 56.00
