Stage 9 of the Tour de France starts and ends in Troyes on Sunday and the riders will tackle a 199km route with 4 short categorized climbs and 14 sections of gravel. We select a 20/1 and a 33/1 shot for a betting interest.
Stage 8 Wrap
Stage 8 wasn’t as dramatic as I had expected and we had a small break go clear early only for Jonas Abrahamsen to continue his incredible tour with a solo break wherein he hoovered up all the King of the Mountains points. It all came back together for a bunch sprint where our selection Biniam Girmay took the win ahead of Philipsen and De Lie.
Jersey Update
Pogacar still leads Evenepoel by 33 seconds and he is 9/20 to win Yellow with with Vingegaard 9/4 and Evenepoel now 12/1.
With Pedersen not starting the stage and Girmay winning the intermediate sprint and the stage there has been a big shake up in the Green Jersey betting with Girmay in from 7/4 to 8/11 and Philipsen out to 27/20 from 11/10.

STAGE 9 ROUTE
What would be a fairly straight forward stage is complicated by the rare introduction of gravel. There are 14 sections totalling 32km and most of these take place in the 2nd half of the stage although the tougher gravel sections involving climbs are in the 1st half.
This means a potential increase in mechanicals and splits in the bunch and will make for a very nervous and fast moving bunch.
STAGE 9 TACTICS
There should be a battle to get into the break as riders will now that an organised chase is a bit tougher give the gravel. There is also likely to be a couple of the GC teams keen to test their rivals and cause splits and if we do get one of the big 4 in trouble it is going to be chaos and the break will be swept back up in the natural course of events. This is a stage not to be missed.

PREDICTION
This stage will suit the Classics type riders but of course some of them will have the role of protecting team leaders.
I expect we will get a strong break but it won’t get a lot of leash and will be reeled in as the race for position hots up.
I am going to go for a win for Yellow Jersey who may well finish it solo and I will also throw in Tom Pidcock who should thrive in these conditions.
