Stage 14 of the Tour de France is 151.9 kilometres in length starting in Pau and finishing in Pla d’ Adet with the first half of the route virtually flat before the riders hit the mountains.
Stage 13 Wrap
What a stage we were treated to. There was a desperate race to get into the break and when the dust settled there was a big group away including our stage pick Van der Poel and Pogacar’s team mate Adam Yates. Yates only 6 minutes back was a threat to podium places and to Vingegaard and Visma worked with other teams to bring it back.
The race had barely settled when we had cross win action but in the end a reduced peloton came together to contest a sprint.
There was a late accident but nothing could stop Philipsen from delivering his best sprint of the Tour for his 2nd stage win.
Jersey Update
There was no change to the Yellow Jersey race although Ayuso was sick and did not finish the stage and with Roglic not starting the stage there was some movement amongst the top 10. Vingegaard remains favourite at 17/20 with Pogacar 1/1.
Philipsen clawed some Green Jersey points back on Girmay but still trails by 75 and is running out of time. Girmay is a 1/9 favourite.
Vingegaard is the 9/4 favourite for the King of the Mountains and the weekend will be massive for this classification.

STAGE 14 ROUTE
The 1st 70km are reasonably flat but the last 80km have 2 HC climbs and a Cat 2. The 1st HC climb is the Col du Tourmalet measuring 19km at 7.4%. The riders then descend to the base of the Cat 2 Hourquette d’Ancizan averaging 5.2% over 8km. A descent is followed by a 10km valley stretch before the final climb up the Pla d’Adet a 10.6km brute averaging 7.9%.
STAGE 14 TACTICS
The flattish start will make it tough for the good climbers to get into the break and it may well be we have a battle all the way until the 1st climb before the break goes. I would expect UAE to take a more defensive approach putting the emphasis on Visma to try and isolate Pogacar.
I expect both teams to try and put riders in the break.
Whether or not the break succeeds will depend on how hard and early Visma and perhaps UAE are prepared to apply pressure and also whether any of the contenders show weakness.

PREDICTION
I think Vingegaard and Pogacar will be marking each other and a rider from the original break or perhaps even a counter break when the original is caught will win it.
