The 2024 Tour de France continues on Sunday with what promises to be another exciting stage stretching 199.2km from Cesenatico to Bologne. We look at the betting odds for Stage 2.
Stage 1 Wrap
Stage 1 showed just how unpredictable the Tour de France could be as Romain Bardet rode across to the early break where he teamed up with his excellent 23 year old team mate Frank Van Den Broek and the pair held off the fast finishing peloton by 5 seconds with Bardet taking his 1st every Yellow Jersey in what is likely his last Tour de France.
It was an incredibly tough stage and only 55 riders finished within 2 minutes of the winner and record hunting Mark Cavendish was dropped on the 1st climb and his efforts to avoid the cut-off with the help of almost his entire team made for quite a side show.
Jersey Update
There is very little change to any of the betting markets with Pogacar favourite for Yellow at 4/7 with Vingegaard who looked fresh passing his first test at 7/4.
Pogacar is the 3/1 favourite to win the Polka Dot Jersey and Wout Van Aert is now 2nd favourite at 6/1 to win the Green Jersey with Phillipsen the favourite at 17/20.

STAGE 2 ROUTE
On the face of it this stage is not as difficult as stage 1 but we have 2 ascents of the brutal Basilica di San Luca in the last 40km. It is a Cat 3 climb and only 1.9km but it is brutally step at an average gradient of 10.6%.
The course starts off flat before the riders hit the 1st of 7 categorized climbs all of which can be described as short but steep.
There is 10km to the end from the top of the final climb.
STAGE 2 TACTICS
I expect there will be a battle to get into the break with a small group of non-threatening riders allowed to build up a lead. Team DSM-Firmenich will make sure there are no dangerous riders and at some point the GC teams will come to the front.
I expect the break to be caught before the final ascent of the Basilica di San Luca (there are bonus seconds on top) at which point all hell should break loose.
If any rider is far stronger than others on the climb he could win solo but I expect a small group will contest the finish.

PREDICTION
As mentioned above I think it all comes back together and I expect Pogacar to attack on the final climb. Roglic is a man who love these short steep climbs and I am backing him to win from a small group.
