Stage 19 of the Tour de France on Friday is a mountain stage starting in Embrun and finishing 144.6 kilometres away in Isola 2000.
Stage 18 Wrap
There was a massive battle to get into the breakaway on Stage 18, but a big group got clear and it was evident early on that the peloton would not chase them down.
Coming up the final climb the break split and in the end it was Michal Kwiakowski who forced the decisive split with two other riders, one of which was Victor Campenaerts who sprinted for the victory. The peloton came in over 13 minutes back.
Jersey Update
There is absolutely no change to the Yellow Jersey rankings and Pogacar remains a 1/12 favourite.
The breakaway also hoovered up the Green Jersey points meaning Biniam Girmay has basically got this one secured and is rightfully priced at 1/50 to win it.
This also wasn’t the day for any big King of the Mountains moves and that will come over the next two days and Pogacar remains favourite there at 7/10.

STAGE 19 ROUTE
We are into the Alps with over 4600 metres of climbing. This is a short stage moving 144.6 kilometres and after a flattish start the climbing gets going after 21 kms with the Col de Vars an 18.8 kilometre climb at 5.7%. A descent is followed by the monstrous Cime de la Bonette which should take the riders over an hour to climb as it measure 22.9 kilometres and 6.9% average. There is a long descent and a bit of valley road before the famous Isola 2000 finishes the stage at 16.1 kilometres with an average of 7.1%. So there are two out of categories and one category 1 climb.
STAGE 19 TACTICS
This should be a fearsome race to get into the break, but I would be surprised if the break succeeds on this stage as Visma simply have to put UAE under pressure and UAE, themselves, may fancy the stage for Tadej Pogacar.
