Aurillac is the start town for Thursday’s Stage 12 of the Tour de France 2024 which finishes in Villeneuve-sur-Lot. It is a flat stage with a number of small hills spread through the 203.6 kilometres.
Stage 11 Wrap
Stage 11 of the Tour de France was one of the most hard ridden I have ever witnessed. The pace was on from the start and despite repeated attempts no breakaway could get more than a couple of minutes ahead of the peloton.
Yellow Jersey Pogacar’s team, UAE were controlling things at the front, clearly intent on making the day as hard as possible. Pogacar launched his attack at the top of the 3rd last climb and managed to get a small gap over Vingegaard which he extended on the descent. At one stage he led by over 30 seconds, but Vingegaard pulled him back on the penultimate climb and the two ended up contesting the stage with Vingegaard holding on in a tight sprint finish. Evenepoel and Roglic were not far behind, but there were big gaps with the field spread out and some of the sprinters coming in 40 minutes down.
Jersey Update
While Vingegaard may have dealt a blow to Pogacar, Pogacar actually extended his lead in the Yellow Jersey to 1 minute 6 seconds from Evenepoel with Vingegaard 1 minute 14 seconds behind. As far as the betting goes there is major change with Vingegaard now the 17/20 favourite and Pogacar out to 1/1 with Evenepoel 28/1.
It is a case of “as you were” in the Green Jersey competition with Girmay still leading Philipsen by 74 points and he is currently 9/20 with Philipsen priced at 7/4.
We have a new King of the Mountains in Pogacar who has over-taken Abrahamsen with Vingegaard now moving into 3rd. Vingegaard is now favourite to win the Polka Dot Jersey at 2/1with Pogacar now 2nd in the betting at 9/4.

STAGE 12 ROUTE
Stage 12 is 203.6 kilometres and has quite a lumpy start before you hit a couple of short Cat 4 climbs in the first-half of the race. The sprint takes place after the 110 kilometres and there is another CAT 4 climb that peaks after 145 kilometres, but the last 70 kilometres or so are fairly straight forward and we should be set for a bunch finish.
STAGE 12 TACTICS
The General Classification teams will take a back seat to this one and a lot will depend on what sort of break gets away. Because of the relatively tough start I don’t think we are going to get a situation where everybody just sits in the peloton and I suspect we will get a break go clear and the teams of Philipsen, Groenewegen and the other sprinters will keep them in check setting us up for a bunch sprint.
