However, at 42 years old, signs of decline have begun to show.
Thompson has lost four of his last five bouts — albeit against high-level opposition — with his most recent outing ending in a third-round knockout defeat to Joaquin Buckley in October. Despite the dip in form, Thompson’s vast UFC experience, dating back to his debut in 2012, should not be underestimated as he looks to rebound this weekend.
Standing in his way is rising Brazilian star Gabriel Bonfim, a well-rounded finisher with a 17-1 professional record. Bonfim has quickly made an impression in the UFC, winning four of his five fights in the promotion — three of those via submission in the first two rounds.
The 26-year-old last competed in February, where he earned a second-round submission victory over Khaos Williams. Known for his slick grappling and opportunistic finishes, Bonfim will likely look to exploit Thompson’s aging movement and aim to get the fight to the mat early.
