Orlando Pirates take on Stellenbosch in the MTN 8 Cup Final in Durban this weekend and we look at the game from a betting angle.
ORLANDO PIRATES
Pirates got their MTN 8 Cup campaign underway with a convincing 3-1 win over SuperSport United. They then beat Cape Town City 3-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals, drawing 1-1 in Cape Town and winning 2-0 at home.
Pirates currently sit 2nd in the PSL on a maximum of 9 points from three games and trailing leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns on goal difference. They were away to Richards Bay this past weekend where despite missing a couple of players, due to injury, they won 1-0 and were 7/10 favourites to win the match.
STELLENBOSCH
After a brilliant 2023/24 PSL season Stellenbosch are struggling a bit at the start of the current League season. They sit 8th on the log and their last game was a 1-1 draw at Polokwane.
Their form in the MTN 8 Cup has been excellent though and they beat TS Galaxy 3-1 at home in the last 8 before seeing off hot favourites, Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals where they won both legs 1-0.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
These sides last met in the League back in December of last season where Stellenbosch beat Pirates 3-2 on the road. They also met in last year’s MTN 8 Cup semi-finals where Pirates beat Stellenbosch 2-1 on the road, but lost 1-0 at home.
Stellenbosch have won 3 of their last 4 matches against Pirates in all competitions.

VERDICT
This should be a tight game between two evenly matched teams. I can relate to the fact that Pirates are favourites, but feel the bookmakers are over-estimating them a touch, particularly given they do have some injury concerns.
To beat Mamelodi Sundowns over two legs is no easy feat and I think Stellenbosch will be up for this one, but my money is on the 90 minute draw.
BET: The draw at 22/10
