The Community Shield will serve as a curtain-raiser, whetting our appetites for the upcoming domestic season in England. With both sides making a habit of meeting at Wembley, we take a look at Saturday’s encounter from a betting perspective.
Let’s begin by looking at the outright betting for the upcoming English Premier League. Manchester City, the usual suspects, are the favourites to successfully defend their title at 23/20. Last season’s runners-up, Arsenal, are the second favourites at 15/8, with Liverpool rounding out the top three at 7/1. Chelsea can be snapped up at 18/1, while Manchester United are priced at a generous 22/1, leaving the rest of the field priced at 28/1 or better.

Despite dominating English football for quite some time, it is surprising that Manchester City have won the Community Shield only twice in their last five attempts, finishing as runners-up in their last three consecutive appearances. Granted, it’s not the sort of silverware that most established clubs seek, but it’s always nice to start their campaigns on a winning note. Interestingly, City have tasted defeat just once in their last four Manchester derbies, with that loss coming in their most recent encounter in the FA Cup final, where they lost 2-1 to the Red Devils last season at Wembley Stadium. This weekend will certainly serve as an opportunity for Pep Guardiola and his men to exact revenge against their neighbours and improve their subpar record at Wembley Stadium.
Having already enjoyed success twice at Wembley Stadium, this will be Erik Ten Hag’s first Community Shield appearance as Manchester United’s manager. With pride very much at stake and a slew of intriguing recruitments both on and off the pitch during the off-season, United will be keen to secure another win over the Citizens, hoping to replicate the success they achieved in last season’s FA Cup final. Yet to fully convince the masses, this season will be crucial for the Red Devils. Having been inconsistent domestically for some time, Manchester United will be desperate to find stability and establish themselves among the Premier League’s elite. While this weekend’s clash may not be a top priority for the season ahead, it certainly sets the tone for what’s to come from the men in red and could help appease the United faithful.
Head-to-Head
Manchester City achieved the double by beating Manchester United home and away in the league last season. However, their most recent encounter ended in a 2-1 defeat to United in the FA Cup final.
Betting
Manchester City 4/7
Draw 15/4
Manchester United 4/1
Prediction
When it comes to Manchester derbies, there is never a dull moment when these two teams face off. This weekend should be no exception, and I’m expecting an exciting encounter with goals from both sides. With all three previous meetings at Wembley Stadium between the teams ending 2-1 to either side, this scenario is worth considering from a betting perspective. Therefore, placing a bet on both teams to score and either side to win by full time could be a promising option.
Suggested Bet: Double Chance and Both Teams to Score, Manchester City/Manchester United and yes at 11/10
