English Premier League Betting Preview, Saturday 26 April
This Saturday, we take a look at three fixtures that stand out most from a betting perspective. Below are my thoughts, along with some options for your consideration.
Before diving into the match previews, let’s take a quick glance at the outright markets. With Liverpool on the verge of securing their 20th league title — currently priced at 1/1000 to do so — it might be wise to explore alternative avenues for value. CHELSEA v EVERTON – Click here to bet
We kick off Saturday’s Premier League action at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea host Everton in a high-stakes clash. Fresh off a gritty 2-1 win away to Fulham last Sunday, Chelsea remain in contention for a Champions League spot, sitting 6th in the table with 57 points—just outside the top five.
Enzo Maresca’s men are unbeaten in their last four league outings, recording two wins and two draws, collecting 8 points from a possible 12. Their form at home has been consistent, with 32 points gathered from 16 games (W9, D5, L2), and they are unbeaten in their last seven league matches at Stamford Bridge (W5, D2).
Goals have been a recurring theme at the Bridge, with 10 of their 16 home matches seeing three or more goals. Chelsea have netted 30 at home, while conceding 17.
Everton travel to the capital in 13th place with 38 points, hoping to bounce back from a disappointing 2-0 loss to Manchester City. Despite that setback, David Moyes’ side have lost just two of their last 10 league matches. However, they have a dismal record at Stamford Bridge, last beating Chelsea at this venue in 1994.
The Toffees have been solid on the road recently, winning three, drawing two, and losing just one of their last six away games, with a narrow 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest in their most recent road trip. Everton have kept things tight away from home—only four of their 16 away games have featured three or more goals.
Head-to-Head
Earlier this season, the sides played out a goalless draw at Goodison Park. Chelsea won this fixture 6-0 last season and are unbeaten in their last 35 home games against Everton in all competitions.
Betting
Chelsea 8/13
Draw 3/1
Everton 9/2
Verdict
Chelsea’s strong home form and historical dominance over Everton at Stamford Bridge should see them through. Expect a tight contest, but the Blues’ attacking quality could prove decisive.
Suggested Bet: Full Time Result – Chelsea at 8/13
NEWCASTLE UNITED v IPSWICH – Click here to bet
With Eddie Howe still recovering from pneumonia, Jason Tindall will continue to oversee the touchline duties as Newcastle look to bounce back from a humbling 4-1 defeat to Aston Villa. Despite that setback, the Magpies remain in 5th place with 59 points and had won five straight league games before last weekend.
At home, Newcastle have been rampant—winning their last four league fixtures at St James’ Park, including a 5-0 demolition of Crystal Palace. They’ve netted 15 goals in that four-match stretch, averaging 3.75 goals per game.
Unsurprisingly, goals are a common theme at St James’ Park, with 11 of their 16 home games producing three or more goals.
Ipswich make the trip north in a desperate but almost certainly futile attempt to avoid relegation. The newly-promoted side are 18th with 21 points and would need a miracle to survive. After last weekend’s 4-0 home defeat to Arsenal, they’ve now lost six of their last eight league matches.
That said, the Tractor Boys have performed marginally better away from home, earning 14 of their 21 points on the road. They’re unbeaten in their last two away games (W1, D1), including a 2-2 draw at Chelsea.
Ipswich’s away games also tend to be open affairs—10 of their 16 road matches have seen three or more goals, with 20 scored and 31 conceded.
Head-to-Head
Newcastle won 4-0 in the reverse fixture earlier this season. Their last home meeting was back in 2016 in the Championship, where the Magpies also secured a comfortable 3-0 win
Betting
Newcastle United 2/9
Draw 6/1
Ipswich 12/1
Verdict.
Despite Ipswich’s slightly better away form, Newcastle’s home dominance and attacking firepower should make this a one-sided affair.
Suggested Bet: Handicap – Newcastle United -1.5 at 8/13
BRIGHTON v WEST HAM – Click here to bet
Saturday’s action concludes at the Amex, where Brighton host West Ham in a match both sides need to win to salvage their seasons and some much needed pride. Brighton sit 10th with 48 points, nine behind the top six, making victory essential to keep their European hopes alive.
Last weekend’s 4-2 defeat to Brentford extended their winless run to five league matches (D2, L3). At home, they’ve also stuttered—drawing 2-2 with Leicester last time out and winless in their last two at the Amex. However, the Seagulls have been relatively sturdy at home all season, losing just three times and collecting 25 points from 16 games (W6, D7, L3).
West Ham, meanwhile, are struggling in 17th place with 36 points. They’ve failed to win any of their last six league matches (D3, L3), and last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Southampton did little to inspire confidence. They’ve picked up just three points from a possible 18 during that stretch.
On the road, West Ham have lost their last two and won just one of their last five (W1, D1, L3), collecting only 17 points from 16 away games overall. Their goal difference away from home is also concerning, with just 16 goals scored and 24 conceded, leaving them with a goal deficit of -8 on their travels.
Only six of their 16 away games have seen three or more goals, as they tend to struggle to create high-scoring encounters on the road.
Head-to-Head
The reverse fixture ended 1-1 earlier this season. However, West Ham won 3-1 at the Amex last term and are unbeaten in their last three against Brighton (W1, D2).
Betting
Brighton 4/6
Draw 16/5
West Ham 4/1
Verdict
Neither side is in good form, but Brighton’s home record and West Ham’s road struggles may give the Seagulls the edge in a cagey affair.
Suggested Bet: Full Time Result – Brighton at 4/6
