The 7th and final week of Varsity Cup Round Robin action takes place on Monday and we take a look at each of the four matches from a betting angle.
UJ v UCT – Click here to bet
UJ currently sit 7th on the log only 3 points above Wits who are in last place. They have lost 5 of their 6 matches including getting hammered 52-5 away at the NWU Eagles last week. In home matches this season they have lost to CUT and to Maties.
UCT are currently 3rd on the log and they need 2 points out of this fixture to guarantee that they don’t slip to 4th. They may even have a mathematical chance of finishing 1st or 2nd on the log, but realistically it is nothing more than that.
Last week UCT were at home to Shimlas where they won 40-26 and on the road this season, they have lost to Maties and CUT.
Head-to-Head
UCT beat UJ 32- 21 at home last season, but last time they met in Johannesburg, UJ triumphed 43-24 in 2023.
Handicap: UJ [+14.5]
NWU EAGLES v CUT – Click here to bet
The Eagles currently sit 5th on the log, just 1 point behind Shimlas who have a tough match away at Tuks, so there is everything to play for, for the home team who have won 3 and lost 3 of their matches. Last week they were too strong for UJ winning 52-5 at home.
CUT have also won 3 and lost 3 of their matches, but they are 5 points behind the Eagles having had points deducted for fielding an ineligible player. They beat Wits 34-28 last week in a tense game at home and that win ensures they will not be automatically relegated this season and they look likely to avoid the relegation battle all together.
Head-to-Head
The Eagles won this fixture 53-46 at CUT last season and the year before they won 45-28 at home.
Handicap: NWU Eagles [-18.5]

TUKS v SHIMLAS – Click here to bet
Tuks top the table after stunning Maties 29-19 in Stellenbosch last week. Their two home games this season have been an 8 point win over UJ and a 9 point win over the Eagles.
Shimlas are occupying the final playoff spot, but they have the Eagles breathing down their neck and will be desperate for a win or even a bonus point win here. They have lost 2 of their last 3 games though including going down 40-26 away to UCT last week and they have lost all 3 of their away matches this season.
Head-to-Head
These sides last met at Tuks in 2023 when it was the visitors who came out on top 26-25.
Handicap: Tuks [-15.5]
WITS v MATIES – Click here to bet
Assuming UJ lose to UCT, Wits will still have a chance of avoiding automatic relegation. To do so they will have to beat 2nd place Maties, who themselves will be hoping Shimlas do them a favour by beating Tuks and allowing Maties to finish top of the log. Wits have lost every match this season including going down by 6 points away to CUT last week. At home they have lost to UJ, the Eagles and Tuks.
Maties suffered their first defeat of the season last week when they were beaten by 10 points at home by Tuks. They have beaten UJ and the Eagles in away matches this season.
Head-to-Head
Maties beat Wits 23-12 at home last season and last time they travelled to Johannesburg they won a thriller 56-54 in 2023.
Handicap: Wits [+13.5]
Note: My bets on today’s matches will be posted throughout the day.
Bet 1: NWU Eagles -18.5 at 1.90
This sounds like a big handicap but I an see a massive win for the Eagles here. They have every chance of making the top 4 and will be motivated to get the bonus point win. CUT on the other hand should be safe from any form of relegation worry (direct or through the playoffs) by kick off time and they have taken some big hidings this season at home to Tuks and away to Maties.
Bet 2: Over 66.5 points Tuks v Shimlas at 1.90
Both teams will be hunting a bonus point victory and Shimlas matches have generally been high scoring this season.
