Stormers
The Stormers are coming off the back of back-to-back defeats away from home in the Champions Cup and URC. In their last match they travelled away from home to take on Leinster two weeks ago and ended up losing that match 36-12 to a severely depleted Leinster side. The Stormers haven’t had the greatest start to the season, winning only four of their nine matches in the URC and they sit 12th on the log but a win here would propel them into the top 8.
Bulls
After a shaky run of games, losing four in a row in all competitions, the Bulls have managed to put together back-to-back wins in recent weeks beating Stade Francais 48-7 in the ERCC at home and the Lions 37-22 in the URC away from home two weeks ago. The Bulls have played eight matches in this year’s URC, winning six and losing two and they sit 3rd on the log 7 points behind Glasgow in 2nd but with 2 games in hand.
Head-to-head
The Stormers have won four of their last five matches against the Bulls in the URC while the Bulls won the most recent contest last year with the match ending 40-22 in Pretoria. The Bulls have not yet beaten the Stormers in Cape Town in the URC with their last Cape Town win coming in the Pro 14 Rainbow Cup in 2021.
Betting and Verdict
The Bulls are favourites to win the match and are trading at 1.75 while the Stormers are trading at 2.25. The draw is currently trading at 23.00.
The handicap at the time of writing is Bulls [-1.5] at 1.90
Although the Bulls have had a slightly better run of form than the Stormers, the Stormers always manage to bring their best when the Bulls travel to Cape Town. Their home form against the Bulls over the last four years leads me to believe that they should be able to win the weekend.
Suggested bet: Stormers to win at 2.10.
The South African derbies are often matches that start off very close but come the second-half open up with plenty of points being scored. In the Stormers last three matches at home, the second-half has seen more points scored while in the Bulls last two matches away from home, the second half has also seen more points scored. I am backing that trend to continue.
