Johan Ackermann Appointed as Vodacom Bulls Head Coach
Vodacom Bulls Confirm Johan Ackermann as New Head Coach
The Vodacom Bulls are proud to announce the appointment of Johan Ackermann as the team’s new head coach, ushering in a new era at Loftus Versfeld.
Ackermann brings elite-level coaching experience, both locally and internationally, most recently assisting with the South African U20s at the World Rugby U20 Championship.
Blue Blood Returns to Loftus Versfeld
“He’s the right person at the right time,” said Willem Strauss, president of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union.
“He’s a Carlton League legend, played his first Test at Loftus, and represented the Bulls – his blood is blue. This was always meant to be.”
Strauss also praised Ackermann’s leadership qualities:
“His management of people and ability to drive culture are renowned.”
A Leader Who Embodies Bulls Values
CEO Edgar Rathbone echoed the excitement, calling Ackermann:
“Not just an outstanding coach, but a leader who lives and breathes the values of this union.”
Rathbone added:
“His ability to develop players, forge winning cultures, and deliver results at the highest level is well known. With Johan at the helm, we’re entering an exciting new chapter shaped by excellence, unity, and ambition.”
Ackermann: “A Dream Come True”
Speaking from Italy, where he is assisting the Junior Springboks, Ackermann described the appointment as a deeply personal milestone:
“The moment I received the call I got goosebumps. It still feels too good to be true.”
“The Bulls have always been close to my heart. Now I have the privilege and honour of leading this proud union.”
He acknowledged the difference in this new role:
“Previously, I had to build teams from scratch. Here, the Bulls are already successful – my job is to help them grow and succeed even more.”
From Player to Coach: The Ackermann Journey
Born in Benoni in 1970, Ackermann carved out a fearsome reputation as a lock, winning 13 Test caps for the Springboks between 1996 and 2007.
At 37, he became the oldest Springbok debutant – a symbol of his resilience and staying power.
After retiring in 2008, he began his coaching career with the Lions, first as a forwards coach, then taking over as head coach in 2013.
Success with the Lions and Beyond
Ackermann transformed the Lions, guiding them to two consecutive Super Rugby finals, instilling an identity of fast, expansive rugby built on discipline and empowerment.
He turned fringe players into Springboks and restored pride in the jersey through his leadership and strong values.
His coaching credentials extended internationally:
-
SA ‘A’ Head Coach (2016 & 2017)
-
Gloucester Rugby (Challenge Cup final, Premiership semi-final)
-
Red Hurricanes & Urayasu D-Rocks in Japan
Coaching Philosophy Grounded in Values
Ackermann’s influence goes beyond tactics. A man of strong faith and former policeman, he values character, culture, and resilience.
His ability to unify diverse squads while developing both champions and people of character has earned him immense respect.
Return to South African Rugby
Earlier this year, Ackermann returned to South Africa as a coaching consultant with the SA U20 side, making an immediate impact in their World Rugby U20 Championship campaign.
Now, back in Pretoria where his journey began, he’s ready to lead the Bulls into a bold new chapter.
Formal Unveiling to Take Place in Pretoria
Ackermann will be formally presented to the media next week at Loftus Versfeld, marking the official beginning of a new era for Vodacom Bulls rugby.
