They won 12 of their 14 matches in the group stages and then went on to beat Fijian Drua 36-5 at home in the quarter-finals. They hosted the Brumbies in the semi-finals where they took control early and won the match 34-20.
The Chiefs, who made the Super Rugby finals last year, but lost out to the Crusaders, finished 4th on the table after winning 9 of their 14 matches. They hosted the Reds in the quarter-finals and won the match convincingly, with the score ending 43-21. They then went on to play the Hurricanes away from home in the semis and managed to win the match 30-19 despite starting as underdogs.
