Week 2 of the 2024 Currie Cup gets going on Friday afternoon and we take a look at all four of the weekend’s matches from a betting angle.
FRIDAY
GRIQUAS v SHARKS – Click here to bet
The Griquas started favourites in their opening match to the Pumas, but lost 44-24 and they now play their first match on home soil.
The Sharks were underdogs at home to the Lions in their opening game, but they were desperately unlucky not to win, missing a conversion in the final minute to go down by a point.
The Sharks beat the Griquas 24-6 at home last season, but in Kimberley the Griquas won 48-40.
Handicap: Griquas +7.5
The Griquas were very poor last week and the Sharks welcome back some of their fringe Springboks and I think the visitors are a cracking bet.
BET: Sharks -7.5 at 19/20
PUMAS v GOLDEN LIONS – Click here to bet
The Pumas got their campaign off to a cracking start with that 20 point win away at Griquas and bookmakers make them firm favourites for this match.
The Lions were full value for their 1 point victory over the Sharks in Durban, although they had to survive that last minute conversion miss to pick up the points. The Lions also welcome a couple of Bok players back in the mix.
Last season the Lions beat the Pumas 26-10 at home, but in Nelspruit it was the Pumas that won 34-27.
Handicap: Pumas -8.5
I am surprised that the Lions are such big underdogs in this game and the Pumas are one of those sides who tend to perform better when they are being written off. I think the Lions will beat this handicap, but I am going to be the more aggressive and take them to win the match.
BET: Golden Lions win at 7/2

SATURDAY
CHEETAHS v WESTERN PROVINCE – Click here to bet
The Cheetahs started 15 point favourites at home to the Griffons last week and they made a mockery of the handicap winning 82-20 in Bloemfontein.
Western Province were at home to the Bulls where they started underdogs and despite a late comeback were beaten 30-25 in wet conditions.
The Cheetahs did the double over Western Province last season winning 26-21 at home and 26-17 on the road.
Handicap: Cheetahs -8.5
I think this Cheetahs side will be too strong for Western Province and can win this one by a double digit margin.
BET: Cheetahs -8.5 at 9/10
SUNDAY
Griffons v Blue Bulls – Click here to bet
Any thoughts the Griffons may have had by contesting for the playoff spots was quickly dispelled last week when the Cheetahs hammered them by 62 points in Bloemfontein.
They now face a Bulls side who were too strong for Western Province in Cape Town winning 30-25 in heavy wind and rain.
The Bulls beat the Griffons 64-33 at Loftus last season, but the Griffons pushed them all the way in Welkom and ended up beating them 32-28 to cause the upset of the season.
Handicap: Griffons +41.5
This Griffons side look well short of Currie Cup pace and the Blue Bulls should win this by plenty.
BET: Blue Bulls -41.5 at 17/20
