Round 9 of the 2024 Currie Cup kicks off on Friday when Griquas will host the Cheetahs followed by the Bulls against the Lions. Saturday will see the Sharks taking on the Griffons while Sunday’s single match is Western Province against the Pumas.
We will take a look at these four matches from a betting angle.
FRIDAY
Griquas v Cheetahs – Click here to bet
The Griquas have won only 1 of their last 5 matches, that win coming against the Griffons away from home two weeks ago. Last weekend the travelled to Pretoria to take on the Bulls but ended up losing that match 47-24. The Cheetahs started their season strong but have hit a slump losing their last two matches against the Lions and the Sharks both at home. The fixture against the Lions was last weekend and ended 21-38. They are in a battle with the Sharks and Pumas for the 3rd and 4th playoff spots.
Head-to-Head
The two sides last met in last years Currie Cup where they played each other twice. The first fixture was won 19-42 by the Cheetahs away from home and the return fixture ended in a 19-19 draw.
Handicap: Cheetahs [-10.5]
The Cheetahs have more to play for and I think they will win this comfortably.
BET: Handicap, Cheetahs [-10.5] at 1.85.
Bulls v Lions – Click here to bet
Arguably the two best sides of this season so far will come head-to-head on Friday in Midrand as both sides look to cement their place at the top of the table with one week to go. They have each won 7 of their 8 matches this season with the only difference being the Bulls having drawn the other while the Lions lost to the Sharks.
The Bulls hosted the Griquas last weekend and won the match 47-24 while the Lions pulled off an impressive win away from home against the Cheetahs with the match ending 21-38.
Head-to-Head
The Bulls have won the last 4 encounters between the two sides between this year’s URC and last year’s Currie Cup. The Lions last beat the Bulls in 2023 in the URC at Loftus where the match ended 25-29.
Handicap: Bulls [-3.5]
I am expecting the Bulls to strengthen their side with some URC players and they can secure top spot on the log.
BET: Handicap, Bulls [-3.5] at 1.85.

SATURDAY
Sharks v Griffons – Click here to bet
The Sharks have turned things around after their poor start to the season and have not lost a game over their last 5 matches. They travelled to the Cape last weekend and pulled off a brilliant win against Province, the match ending 23-31.
The Griffons continue to look for their first win of the season and only have 2 more chances. They hosted the Pumas last weekend and lost the match 26-45 at home.
Head-to-Head
The two sides faced each other twice in last years Currie Cup with the Sharks winning both of the matches, however, their largest winning margin was only 26 points.
Handicap: Griffons [+34.5]
The Sharks will get their bonus point win but the Griffons will keep on trying and can beat this handicap.
BET: Handicap, Griffons [+34.5] at 1.85
SUNDAY
Western Province v Pumas – Click here to bet
Province have only won 1 of their last 4 matches, however, it must be taken into consideration that they played all of the top four sides in those matches. They hosted the in form Sharks last weekend and lost the match 23-31.
The Pumas have won 4 of their 8 matches this season. Their most recent fixture was against the Griffons last weekend where they won 26-45 away from home.
WP won’t make the semi-finals but the Pumas are still in contention.
Head-to-Head
The two sides met twice in last years Currie Cup with both teams winning a match a piece. On both occasions the team at home came out on top, with the match in Cape Town ending 22-14 in favour of Province.
Handicap: Pumas [-2.5]
I am also expecting WP to strengthen their team with some URC players and they can beat a Pumas team that hasn’t been at their best this season.
BET: Western Province to win at 2.20.
