🏇 The First Entries Are In for the 2025 Durban July!
A total of 61 hopefuls from 28 top stables have thrown their names into the hat for South Africa’s biggest racing and social event – the R5-million Hollywoodbets Durban July (Gr1), set to light up Greyville Racecourse on Saturday, 5 July.
Leading the charge is Justin Snaith, who’s gunning for his sixth July title with 10 entries. Among them, the 2025 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met winner Eight On Eighteen, a multiple Gr1-winning 3-year-old, and the rapidly rising Okavango, expected to feature in the World Sports Betting 1900 on 10 May.
There’s strong representation from Alec Laird, who returns with a powerful trio including Gr1 Champions Challenge winner Fire Attack, Summer Cup victor Atticus Finch, and Gauteng Guineas champ Parisian Walkway – all chasing Laird’s first July win since the iconic London News in 1996.
Reigning champion Oriental Charm will return for a title defence, nominated by James Crawford, aiming for a third consecutive July win following last year’s triumph and 2023’s victory with Winchester Mansion.
Mike and Mathew de Kock have five early contenders in the mix, spearheaded by the promising Immediate Edge, while Sean Tarry is back with a strong hand, including last year’s runner-up Cousin Casey and SA Derby winner Legend Of Arthur.
International flair comes via The Equator (IRE), an Aidan O’Brien-bred import trained by Tony Peter, looking to make a statement on South African turf.
With familiar names and exciting new prospects on the list, the 129th running of the Durban July is shaping up to be a showdown for the ages.
