F1 MEXICO GRAND PRIX

F1 heads into the second leg of its American swing this weekend as the paddock moves to Mexico City for the Mexican Grand Prix at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. With just three races to follow, the pressure on the Drivers’ Championship contenders is mounting, and this round could be pivotal both for momentum and the points table. Below, we break down the key talking points and betting angles.

Previous Race – United States GP

Last week in Austin, Max Verstappen produced a faultless weekend, sweeping both the sprint and the main Grand Prix for maximum points. The win moves him closer to the McLaren duo at the top of the standings.

  • Lando Norris drove consistently to secure second place, trimming the gap to his teammate.
  • Charles Leclerc continued his solid season with another podium.
  • Oscar Piastri, despite leading the standings, endured a frustrating weekend, only managing fifth.

Drivers’ Championship Update

  • Oscar Piastri – 346 points
  • Lando Norris – 332 points
  • Max Verstappen – 306 points

In a twist few expected, the bookmakers now have Max Verstappen as the favourite to win the title, priced at 2.45, despite still trailing Piastri by 40 points. Piastri is offered at 2.60, while Norris sits at 2.80, reflecting how tight the title race has become.

Mexico GP 2024 Recap

Last year saw Carlos Sainz, then at Ferrari, deliver a stunning drive to victory, holding off the McLarens.

  • Lando Norris – 2nd
  • Charles Leclerc – 3rd
  • Max Verstappen – 6th
  • Oscar Piastri – 8th

The Track – Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez

  • Location: Mexico City, 2,240 metres (7,350 ft) above sea level – the highest altitude circuit on the F1 calendar.
  • Lap length: 4.304 km | Race distance: 71 laps (305 km).
  • Layout: Known for its long 1.2 km main straight, tight stadium section, and the iconic Peraltada corner.
  • Unique factors:
    • Thin air – The high altitude means around 25% less oxygen, reducing downforce and making cooling a major issue for engines and brakes.
    • Top speed – Cars can reach up to 350 km/h on the straight, making it one of the fastest tracks despite its relatively short lap length.
    • Tyres – High track temperatures combined with lower downforce put unusual demands on the tyres, often leading to alternative strategies.
  • Historical bias: Red Bull and Mercedes have traditionally gone well here due to strong power units and efficient aero, but Ferrari surprised with victory last year.

Verdict & Suggested Bets

  • Max Verstappen looks unstoppable right now. With Red Bull’s strong record in Mexico and Verstappen’s momentum, he’s a worthy favourite.
    • Suggested Bet: Max Verstappen to win at 2.50.
  • Ferrari podium play: Last year Ferrari shone in Mexico, and Leclerc has shown solid pace recently. With Hamilton still searching for a podium in red, Leclerc looks the more likely of the two.
    • Suggested Bet: Charles Leclerc podium finish at 2.90.
