The Pretoria Capitals and Paarl Royals meet for the second time in two days when they clash at Centurion Park in Match 6 of the SA20 on Sunday.
At the time of writing, (before Saturday’s double-header) the Paarl Royals were the 7/2 favourites to win the SA20 with the Pretoria Capitals, the rank outsiders, at 6/1.
Match 3 – Royals v Capitals
These sides met at Boland Park in Paarl on Friday and the Pretoria Capitals won the toss and to many people’s surprise decided to field first. The move appeared to have paid off as they pegged the Royals back early and at one point it looked as though the Royals were going to battle to the 140 mark.
Some excellent batting in the middle order by David Miller and Mitch van Buuren together with a cameo by Phehlukwayo at the end saw them to 167 for 7, a testing target on this wicket although bookmakers still had the Capitals as the favourites. Miller ended up top score of 41 at a strike rate of 124 and van Buuren’s knock of 28 off 21 balls came at a crucial time when it appeared that the Capitals were getting the upper hand.
The wickets were fairly evenly spread amongst the Capitals bowlers, but the pick for me was Daryn Dupavillon with his 2 for 29 off 4 overs and he was very unlucky to concede some of those 29 runs to outside edges.
The Capitals knew they had to start fast and so they did with Phil Salt getting stuck into the attack, but Jacks was excellently caught and bowled by Ngidi in the second over with the score on 18. Salt continued to attack the new ball, but when the power play ended and the ball softened, the runs started drying up. At 78 for 2 in the 10th over they were still well on track, but a brilliant catch by van Buuren saw Rilee Rossouw depart for a well-played 29 off 18 balls. Salt was then out for 39 off 31 and there was a massive swing in the betting as the Capitals went to rank outsiders within a few overs. They finally reached 133 for 7 to lose by 27 runs.

Pretoria Capitals 19/20
Paarl Royals 9/10
I like what I saw of this Royals team and I think that a number of their batsmen, such as Buttler and Roy will be better suited to the conditions at Centurion Park. The Capitals will be relying heavily on the likes of Salt and Jacks up front, but I wasn’t impressed by the general performance on Friday and I am going to back the Royals to double up.
Suggested Bet: Paarl Royals win at 9/10
I had never seen Obed McCoy bowl before, but he was very impressive in Paarl and I think he is also going to be suited to the Centurion Park track. I am going to back him to be the top Royals bowler.
Suggested Bet: Top Royals Bowler, Obed McCoy at 12/5
The bet that was good to me last year was going overs on runs in the Pretoria Capitals first over as both Salt and Jacks are attacking players. I am going to give it another go on Sunday.
Suggested Bet: Pretoria Capitals, Over 1 Runs, over 6.5 at 1/1
