The second and final Test match between Zimbabwe and South Africa gets underway on Sunday, 6 July at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. We take a look at the clash from a betting perspective and highlight a few plays for your consideration.
1st Test Match Recap
South Africa set the tone with a commanding first-innings total of 418/9 declared after winning the toss and electing to bat first. This innings was led by a brilliant knock of 153 runs from debutant Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who took control of the innings after a shaky start which saw the Proteas drop wickets early at a rapid rate. He was well supported by the likes of Corbin Bosch, who scored a solid 100 off 124 deliveries, and Dewald Brevis, who added a quick 51 runs to the scoreboard to give the innings momentum. On the Zimbabwean end, it was Tanaka Chivanga who claimed standout bowler status, picking up 4/83 in his 16 overs.
In response, Zimbabwe once again relied on veteran Sean Williams, who scored a superb 137 off 164 balls, despite no one sticking with him at the crease for much time at all. Although he batted well, no other batter managed to pass 40 runs and they were bundled out for 251, giving South Africa a hefty first-innings lead. Wiaan Mulder led the bowling attack for South Africa with 4/50 at an economy rate of 3.12, while Keshav Maharaj and Codi Yusuf each grabbed 3 wickets.
South Africa opted not to enforce the follow-on, but they piled on the pressure with a second innings total of 369, with Mulder again starring, this time with the bat where he put up a steady score of 147 off 206 balls. Captain Maharaj contributed 51 down the order to claim 2nd highest run scorer in the Proteas second innings. Zimbabwe’s bowlers battled once again and this time it was Wellington Masakadza who topped their lineups figures, finishing on 4/98 throughout his 22 over spell.
Set to chase an improbable target of 537 to win, Zimbabwe faltered early and despite a fighting 57 from Masakadza and a late effort of 32 not out from Blessing Muzarabani, they were bowled out for 208, losing the match by 328 runs. Corbin Bosch was the man to tear through the middle order batsmen, with figures of 5/43 in only 12 overs bowled, completing a standout all-round performance.
