The Proteas won the toss at the Wanderers and opted to bat first. India quickly gained the upper hand by taking two wickets in the second over, while limiting South Africa to only two runs. The South African team then continued to crumble under pressure from the Indian bowlers, with Singh claiming five wickets and Khan taking four. South Africa was bowled out for a mere 116 runs in the 28th over leaving the large crowd deflated.
Despite the Proteas managing to secure an early wicket, India swiftly regained momentum and took control of the chase. Both Sudharsan and Iyer scored half-centuries, comfortably chasing down the 116 runs set by South Africa with over 30 overs remaining.
