1ST TEST RECAP
South Africa won a nail-biting opening Test match of this 2 Test series by 2 wickets at Centurion in the Boxing Day Test.
Paterson and Bosch the Destroyers
South Africa won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that paid dividends when they bowled Pakistan out for 211. Kamran Ghulam was the top Pakistan batsman with 54 and while plenty of players got starts, none of them really got going. Dane Paterson was pick of the South African bowlers with 5 for 61 ably supported by Corbin Bosch with 4 for 63 on debut.
Bosch in dream debut
South Africa were 3 down for 66 runs in their response, but Markram and Bavuma steadied the ship with Markram ultimately top scoring with 89, although he was given a run for his money with a brilliant 81 not out from Corbin Bosch towards the tail end of the innings. South Africa reached 301 for a lead of 90 and at that point were firmly in the driver’s seat.
Jansen on fire
Pakistan made a steady start to their 2nd Innings, but ultimately lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 237 leaving South Africa with 148 to win. Babar Azam scored his first Test 50 in some time, but was dismissed straight afterwards. Saud Shakeel showed plenty with the bat scoring an excellent 84 before been trapped in front by Jansen. Jansen was comfortably the pick of the bowlers with 6 for 52 off his 14 overs.
Rabada sees SA home
South Africa lost regular wickets, but appeared to be cruising to victory at 96 for 4 when Temba Bavuma was out caught behind and what stunned TV viewers was that he never called for a review and replays subsequently showed that he missed the ball. A spate of wickets then fell leaving South Africa on 99 for 8 and underdogs for the match, but number 10, Kagiso Rabada had other ideas and with the support of Marco Jansen they saw South Africa home with Rabada finishing on 31 not out. Temba Bavuma topped scored in the innings with 40. Mohammad Abbas was superb with the ball in the 2nd Innings for Pakistan getting 6 for 54 in 19.3 overs.

It is going to be interesting to see South Africa’s mind-set now that their place in the World Test Championship Final has been confirmed. There remain plenty of questions at the top of the order and I certainly won’t be backing them at 11/20, but I am also reluctant to go against them. Fortunately there are plenty of other betting markets to get involved in.
There are two bowlers, in particular, that I think are going to be well suited by conditions at Newlands. Dane Paterson gets the ball to move just enough and I am hoping that he can fulfil the role we have previously seen from Vernon Philander. I am going to back him to get 5 wickets or more in the match.
BET: Paterson over 4.5 match wickets at 5/4
Abbas was superb in the 1st Test, particularly in the 2nd Innings and I expect the Newlands conditions to suit him as he is very accurate. Taking a slightly lesser price on this one, but also backing him to get 5 wickets or more in the match.
BET: Abbas over 4.5 match wickets at 17/20
Then let’s have a speculative play on the Player of the Match. Tristan Stubbs was disappointing in the 1st Test, but he looks a quality player and I am hoping he can put in a big shift with the bat.
BET: Player of the Match, Tristan Stubbs at 21/2
