World Cup T20 Super Eights action continues on Friday the 27th of February in Colombo when England and New Zealand meet in Match 49.  We look at the match from a betting angle and suggest a few plays for consideration.

Let’ s start with a look at the Outright Betting where India are the favourites priced at 3.20 followed by South Africa at 3.40 with England 5.00 and New Zealand 7.00.  The West Indies are trading at 23.00 and you can get 67.00 Pakistan.

Please note betting will be suspended during matches.

Super Eights Format

There are two groups of four.  Each team will play three matches and the top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals.

ENGLAND

England head Group 2 and are on 4 points going into the 3rd and final match of their Super Eights round against New Zealand who are in 2nd spot on 3 points. They are guaranteed to qualify for the semi-finals.

First Super Eights Match

Their first match was against Sri Lanka who won the toss and elected to bowl first. Phil Salt top scored with  62 runs off 40 balls, which included 6 fours and 2 sixes, to anchor England’ s innings.  The rest of the batsmen struggled at times with Will Jacks scoring a useful 21 runs, the only other batsmen to get over 20.  They reached a total of 146/9 in their 20 overs.  They bowled Sri Lanka out for just 95 runs in 16.4 overs with Will Jacks topping the bowling taking 3 wickets for 22 runs in his 4 overs.  England won by 51 runs.

Will Jacks was named Player of the Match with his 21 off 14  and 3/22.

Second Super Eights Match

England met Pakistan in their second Group 2 match.  Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first.  They posted a total of 164/9 in their 20 overs.  Liam Dawson took 3 for 24 in his 4 overs with Archer and Overton taking 2 and Rashid 1.  England’ s openers were caught out quickly then Captain, Harry Brook, under pressure scored a brilliant century off  51 balls.  Will Jacks provided the only support with his 28 off 23 balls.  England reached 166/8 in 19.1 overs winning by 2 wickets with 5 balls to spare.

NEW ZEALAND

First Super Eights Match

New Zealand and Pakistan opened the round of Super Eights, but the match was abandoned with no result due to rain. Both teams were awarded 1 point each.

Second Super Eights Match

Their second Group 2 match was against Sri Lanka who won the toss and elected to bowl.  New Zealand scored 168 for 7 in their 20 overs.   Top batsman with 47 off 26 balls was captain, Mitchell Santner who hit 2 fours and 4 sixes.  They had a comfortable victory by 61 runs as they bowled Sri Lanka out for 107/8 in their 20 overs. Player of the match was Rachin Ravindra who took 4 wickets for 27 runs and scored 32 runs off 22 balls.

England 1.78

New Zealand 2.05

England have already qualified for the semi-finals and New Zealand are very likely to make it through given their current run rate, although they won’ t want to take any chances.

SUGGESTED BETS

BET:  Top New Zealand Wicket Taker Rachin Ravindra at 8.50

Ravindra has taken 6 wickets at an average of 11.50 and he is the sort of bowler England will be looking to get after and that opens up wicket taking opportunities.

BET:  Team to score the most sixes, New Zealand at 2.25

Both of these sides have plenty of players who can clear the boundary, but I give New Zealand a slight edging in this department and I am happy to back them as underdogs.

BET:  Player of the Match, Will Jacks at 14.00

Jacks has been superb in this Tournament winning this award on 3 occasions.  He doesn’t always get time at the crease but can bat really quickly when he comes in and is capable of getting amongst the wickets and changing the game with the ball.
