The 2025/26 SA20 season gets underway at Newlands on Friday, 26 December, with defending champions MI Cape Town hosting Durban’s Super Giants. We set the scene for the tournament opener and take a look at the match and outright betting markets.
Tournament Outlook
MI Cape Town arrive as defending champions after beating the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in last season’s final and are priced at 2.75 to go back-to-back. The Sunrisers are next best at 5.50, while Durban’s Super Giants are available at 7.00 in the outright market.

MI Cape Town v Durban’s Super Giants
MI Cape Town topped the league table last season, winning 7 of their 9 completed matches, and they carried that momentum all the way through to the title. The batting was built around the consistency of Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton, both of whom enjoyed outstanding campaigns. With the ball, they boast serious firepower in Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan, giving them balance and wicket-taking threat throughout the innings.
It was a disappointing season for Durban’s Super Giants last year, finishing bottom of the table with just 2 wins from 10 matches, with two fixtures washed out. Weather interruptions were a recurring frustration, particularly in Durban, and they will be hoping for clearer skies this season.
There is renewed optimism, however. The Super Giants have prised Aiden Markram away from the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, and he will captain a side with considerable upside. Their bowling attack includes high-quality spin options in Sunil Narine and Noor Ahmad, supported by exciting pace prospects Kwena Maphaka and Eathan Bosch amongst others.
Head-to-Head
MI Cape Town won the Newlands fixture last season by 7 wickets after winning the toss and opting to field. Durban posted 149/6, which MI Cape Town chased down with more than five overs to spare, with Ryan Rickelton starring with 63 off 41 balls.
The return fixture in Durban was abandoned without a result.
Match Odds – click here to bet
- MI Cape Town: 1.60
- Durban’s Super Giants: 2.45
The market looks about right for the opening game of the tournament. In a format where momentum can swing quickly, I’m happy to wait for in-running opportunities rather than committing heavily pre-match.
That said, there is action to be found in the exotic markets.
Suggested Bets
Noor Ahmad – Durban’s Super Giants Top Wicket-Taker @ 3.75
Ahmad is an exceptionally talented young spinner and a consistent wicket-taker. MI Cape Town will need to attack him at some point, and when they do, wickets could fall in clusters.
Player of the Match – Heinrich Klaasen @ 12.00
While I’m sitting out the match result market, I have a feeling DSG could respond positively under Markram’s leadership. If they do pull off the upset, Klaasen’s power and ability to dominate spin make him a strong candidate for Player of the Match at a generous price.
