AUSTRALIA
Australia haven’t started their World Cup campaign in the best manner, managing to win only one of the first three games they have played. This leaves them in 8th place on the table with only two points.
In their most recent game against Sri Lanka, Australia lost the toss and were asked to field.
Australia didn’t start strong, allowing Sri Lanka to score 125 runs before taking the first wicket. They only managed to take the second wicket in the 27th over, with Sri Lanka on 157 runs and seemingly set for a big total. Australia were able to turn the innings around though allowing Sri Lanka to score only an additional 52 runs before being bowled out in the 43rd over for 209. Zampa played a significant role in the comeback, taking four wickets in the eight overs he bowled.
Australia lost 2 wickets in the fourth over but the middle order were able to build the innings. Marsh and Inglis both earned half-centuries, while Marnus Labuschagne fell just ten runs short of his own. This batting effort allowed Australia to comfortably chase down Sri Lanka’s 209 runs in the 36th over, earning them their first win of the tournament.
PAKISTAN
Pakistan have opened their World Cup campaign by winning two of their first three games, which has earned them four points and placed them in fourth position on the table.
In their most recent match against India, they lost the toss and were sent in to bat first.
Pakistan’s top order put in a decent effort at the crease, scoring 164 runs before the fourth wicket fell. Azam reached a half-century, and Rizwan missed his by just one run. However, they were let down by the rest of the batting order, which only managed to score an additional 27 runs before the tenth wicket fell in the 43rd over, leaving them with a total of just 191 runs.
Pakistan also had a decent start with their bowling, taking the first wicket in the third over. However, they struggled to maintain momentum because of the pressure applied by the Indian batsmen. India easily chased down Pakistan’s 191 runs in the 31st over, with Pakistan managing to take only three wickets, two of which came from Afridi. This resulted in a seven-wicket loss, marking their first defeat of the tournament.
