Australia played their first game of the tournament on Sunday, where they were sent in to bat first and lost to India by 6 wickets in Chennai.
Mitchell Marsh was dismissed early, making 0 runs off 6 balls, putting Australia under early pressure. David Warner and Steve Smith then stabilised the innings with a solid partnership. Warner ended the day scoring 41 runs with Smith being the top batsman with 46 runs, Australia managed to edge to a total of 199 runs leaving India to chase down 200 runs for the win.
Australia put immense pressure on the Indian side early in the second innings, taking 3 wickets before India could even put 3 runs on the board. India fought back though and got the winning runs with 6 wickets in hand and over 8 overs to spare.
Josh Hazlewood was the star bowler on the day, taking 3 wickets in his 9 overs for just 38 runs. Another notable bowling performance was that of Mitchell Starc who took 1 wicket and held an economy rate of 3.88 across his 8 overs.
SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa played Sri Lanka on Saturday in Delhi in their opening game of the World Cup, where they batted first, putting up a massive total of 428 runs, which Sri Lanka fell 102 runs short of.
After Themba Bavuma left the park with an early dismissal, the South African batting innings was rescued by 3 brilliant centuries from Quinton De Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram.
After putting runs on the board, South Africa sent Sri Lanka in with a lot of work to do. Marco Jansen picked up the first 2 wickets of the innings, piling the pressure on Sri Lanka who had made a fast start.
Thereafter the bowler of the game was Gerald Coetzee who picked up 3 wickets in his 9 over spell. Kagiso Rabada also put in an effective performance, taking 2 wickets and ending the game on the last ball of his 7th over.

Australia and South Africa met in South Africa in September in a 5 match ODI series. Australia won the 1st 2 matches only for the Proteas to storm back to win the series.
