South Africans Louis Oosthuizen, Ockie Strydom, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Thriston Lawrence, Ernie Els, Christo Lamprecht, Charl Schwartzel, Branden Grace, Martin Rohwer, Kyle Barker will all play in the 151st Open Championship this week at Hoylake.
LIV golfers Branden Grace and Charl Schwartzel are back at the majors after booking their spots at Royal Cinque Ports in qualifying a few weeks ago. It’s Brandon Grace’s first start in a major this year but we won’t have to wait long to see him in action after he was drawn against Matthew Jordan (Eng) and Richie Ramsay (Sco) in the 1st match of the day (7:35 am)
Louis Oosthuizen, who won the famous Claret Jug in 2010, tees off at 8:52 am with fellow South African amateur Christo Lamprecht, and Holland’s Joost Luiten.
Lamprecht secured his place after last month after becoming the third South African winner of the Amateur Championship in the previous six years.
Thriston Lawrence, who sits 80th in the World rankings, missed the cut at the Scottish Open last week but is a two-time winner this year, including BMW International Open in June; This is his second Open after playing at St Andrews in 2022. He plays the 1st two rounds with Thomas Detry (Bel) and Brian Harman (US)
Ernie Els tees off at 9:36 on Thursday and plays the opening two rounds with Takumi Kanaya (Jpn) and Kurt Kitayama (US).
We know him as “The Big Easy,” and despite recent struggles, Ernie Els still has a record to be proud of! Two wins, three runner-up finishes, and two 3rd place finishes at The Open, among nine total top-5 finishes.
Will Ernie Els roll back the years? He’s 10/1 in the top South African betting.
