Varsity Cup continues on Monday and we take a look at the four games from a betting angle.

Let’s start with a look at the Varsity Cup Outright Betting where there has been another shake-up with the Maties return to the top of the betting boards at 5/2, the Eagles who went down to the Maties are now out to 3/1 and you can get 6/1 Wits and 13/2 Shimlas and Ikeys with 12/1 and better available on the balance.

UJ v CUT – Click here to bet

UJ play their second successive home match beating Ikeys 43-24 last week, that was enough to move them to 6th on the table after they had lost by 2 points on the road to Wits and by 13 points away at the Eagles.

CUT are currently 3rd on the log with 2 wins and 1 loss from their opening games.  They hosted Wits in Week 1 and went down by 10 points in a high scoring encounter.  They then travelled to Maties where they got a 4 point win in a low scoring game.  Back home last week where they did enough to beat TUKS 41-39.

Last season CUT hosted this fixture and the sides played to an incredible 44-44 draw.

The Total Points line has been set at 64.5 and over 64.5 would have arrived in all 3 UJ fixtures and in 2 of the CUT matches,

Suggested Bet:  Over 64.5 at 17/20

Ikeys v Shimlas – Click here to bet

Ikeys are currently 7th on the log with just 1 win from their opening 3 games.  They suffered a narrow defeat to Maties in Week 1 and they then beat Tuks by 23 points at home.  They started favourites against UJ away last week, but went down by 19 points.

Shimlas currently sit 4th on the table with 2 victories and 1 loss from their 3 opening games.  They opened their campaign with a narrow home win over Tuks on the road, they were then hammered away at the NWU Eagles going down 63-16.  They were our most confident bet of the week the last time out when they hosted Wits although they only just got up to win 26-25.

Last season the Shimlas hosted the Ikeys beating them 58-7.  While the Shimlas big defeat away at the Eagles is a concern I am more than happy to take them on any plus handicap here.

Suggested Bet:  Shimlas +4.5 at 9/10

Wits v Maties – Click here to bet

Wits are currently 2nd on the table with 2 wins and 1 loss in their opening 3 matches while Maties have also won 2 and lost 1 and sit down in 5th place on the log.

Wits suffered their first defeat last week when they went down by 1 point on the road to Shimlas having narrowly beaten UJ at home and CUT on the road.

Maties lost to Ikeys by 2 points in a low scoring encounter in Week 1 and they were then beaten 21-19 by CUT in front of their home fans.  They got a much needed victory last week though when starting underdogs away to Eagles only to come from behind to win 31-28.

Maties hosted Wits last year winning 37-10 at the Danie Craven Stadium.

I still feel that Maties have been priced on reputation rather than current performance and I think Wits look a worthy bet on the handicap.

Suggested Bet:  Wits +5.5 points at 9/10

Tuks v NWU Eagles – Click here to bet

Defending Champions, Tuks are bottom of the table without a victory in their opening 3 games.  They face top of the table, NWU who have won 2 and lost 1 of their opening 3 matches.

Tuks went down by a point at home to Shimlas in their opener and they were then beaten by 42-19 points on the road at the Ikeys and also went down by 2 points on the road to CUT last time out.

The Eagles opened their campaign with a 13 point home win over UJ and they stayed at home for Round 2 where they demolished the Shimlas 63-15.   Last week though they were brought back down to earth by Maties going down 28-31 at home.

Last season the Eagles hosted Tuks and beat them 17-8 in a low scoring encounter.

Tuks have shown me nothing this season to suggest that they are going to be a match for this Eagles team and I like the Eagles to win this one going away.

Suggested Bet:  Eagles -4.5 at 9/10
