Daryz Returns to Defend His Arc Crown
All eyes will be on Daryz, who arrives as the reigning champion after a dramatic victory over Minnie Hauk last year. The winning margin was just a head, and he now has the opportunity to become the first colt in nearly 50 years to win the Arc in consecutive years.
His preparation offers plenty of encouragement. Daryz has won three of his four starts this season and most recently came out on top against Bay City Roller in the Prix Foy over the same course and distance.
The defending champion has the form and experience to make his presence felt again, but the challenge from the rest of the field promises to be substantial.
British and Irish Challengers Target Paris Glory
The visiting contingent includes several runners with notable achievements on the European racing circuit.
Maltese Cross
Maltese Cross arrives with a strong profile after finishing second in the Epsom Derby and winning the Grand Prix de Paris, giving trainer William Haggas and jockey Tom Marquand a chance to secure their first Arc victory.
His French Group 1 success adds an important achievement to his record as he prepares for another major test at Longchamp.
Kalpana
Kalpana, trained by Andrew Balding, returns after finishing seventh in last year’s Arc. The King George winner has continued to develop this season and will be partnered by Colin Keane for the 2026 renewal.
Saddadd and Friendly Soul
The British challenge also includes Saddadd, winner of the Grosser Preis von Baden, and Friendly Soul, who arrives after her success in the Prix Vermeille.
Both bring high-level form into a race that regularly attracts some of the season’s leading middle-distance performers.
Aidan O’Brien Brings Three Runners to the Arc
Aidan O’Brien has three chances to add another major international prize to his record, with Minnie Hauk, Diamond Necklace and Benvenuto Cellini all declared.
Minnie Hauk returns after her narrow defeat to Daryz last year, when she was beaten by just a head. She will be looking to go one better this time, although her rider is still to be confirmed.
O’Brien’s other two runners add further depth to the Ballydoyle challenge, while his son Joseph O’Brien also has a contender in Thundering On, the Oaks winner.
Japan and France Look to Make Their Mark
Japan’s long wait for a first Arc triumph continues, with Meisho Tabaru and Admire Terra set to represent the country.
The home team includes Daryz, alongside Arrow Eagle, Chestnut Rocket and Varandir. Germany will be represented by Bright Light, adding another international dimension to the field.
With runners arriving from several racing nations, the Arc once again brings together a diverse group of horses for one of the biggest prizes in the sport.
