They began with a 1-1 draw against Qatar before responding with a dominant 4-1 victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina. They topped things off with a narrow 2-1 win over Canada to secure top spot in their group with seven points.
Their Round of 32 clash against Algeria saw Switzerland produce another well rounded performance. They controlled proceedings throughout and claimed a comfortable 2-0 victory to claim their spot in the Round of 16.
Switzerland were then involved in one of the most intense matches of the tournament against Colombia. After neither side could be separated across 120 goalless minutes, the contest was decided from the penalty spot. Granit Xhaka, Zeki Amdouni, Cedric Itten and Ruben Vargas all found the back of the net on their penalties as Switzerland prevailed 4-3 in the shootout to advance to the quarter-finals.
