FIFA World Cup Group B Preview – 24 June

Group B comes to an end on Wednesday night, with Bosnia and Herzegovina taking on Qatar and Canada and Switzerland meeting in a top of the table clash. We look at both fixtures from a betting angle.

Group B Update

Canada and Switzerland both sit on four points after recording one win and one draw from their opening two matches. Canada currently top the group courtesy of a superior goal difference.

Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar each have one point, with Bosnia and Herzegovina occupying third place heading into the final round of fixtures.

With 8 of the 12 third-placed teams progressing to the knockout stages, there remains a realistic possibility that the third-placed team from Group B could still qualify for the Round of 32.

The winner of the Canada v Switzerland clash will top the group, while the loser should still be relatively safe on four points.

The other fixture will represent the last chance for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar to keep their World Cup hopes alive. In fact, it will be the final dance for one or even both sides, as a draw that leaves them on just two points may not be enough to secure qualification to the knockout stages.

Bosnia & Herzegovina vs Qatar

Bosnia & Herzegovina opened their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Canada. The Europeans fell behind through an early Canadian strike but responded well and secured a valuable point thanks to an equaliser from Jovo Lukić.

Their second outing ended in a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Switzerland. Bosnia held firm for much of the encounter and the match remained goalless until the 74th minute before Johan Manzambi broke the deadlock. Ruben Vargas doubled the advantage ten minutes later and although Ermin Mahmić pulled one back deep into stoppage time, two goals from the Swiss side completed a heavy loss.

Qatar began the tournament with an impressive 1-1 draw against Switzerland despite being overwhelming underdogs. The Middle Eastern nation defended resolutely for long periods and earned a deserved point after finding an equaliser against one of the favourites in the group in the dying moments of the clash.

However, their second match proved disastrous as they suffered a crushing 6-0 defeat to Canada. Cyle Larin opened the scoring before Jonathan David netted twice in the first half. Nathan Saliba added a fourth after the break while Mohammad Al Mannai’s own goal and a David hat-trick goal deep into stoppage time completed the rout.

Head-to-Head

The last two meetings between the nations have produced one win for Qatar and one draw. Their most recent encounter ended 1-1 in an International Friendly during 2010.

Qatar 7.25

Verdict

Neither side has enjoyed a successful tournament, but Bosnia & Herzegovina have faced stronger opposition more competitively and remain capable of creating chances against vulnerable defences. Qatar were completely overwhelmed by Canada, and their defensive frailties are difficult to ignore. Bosnia should have enough quality to finish their campaign with a victory, but I am not expecting a high scoring match.

Switzerland vs Canada

Switzerland were frustrated in their opening fixture after being held to a 1-1 draw by Qatar. Despite dominating possession and entering the match as overwhelming favourites, the team were unable to turn their superiority into three points and had to settle for a share of the spoils.

They responded brilliantly in Round 2 with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina. Johan Manzambi finally broke the resistance with 15 minutes left before Ruben Vargas added to the lead. Bosnia briefly threatened a comeback through Ermin Mahmić, but Johan Manzambi completed his brace, and Granit Xhaka converted a late penalty to seal an impressive win.

Canada also began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia & Herzegovina. The North Americans looked the stronger side for long spells but could not convert their opportunities into goals and ended the fixture with 1 point on the log.

Their second performance was among the most convincing displays of the tournament so far as they dismantled Qatar 6-0. Cyle Larin opened the scoring before Jonathan David struck twice before half-time. Nathan Saliba added another after the interval, an own goal increased the margin further and David completed his hat-trick in stoppage time to cap a dominant display.

Head-to-Head

The only previous meeting between these nations came in an International Friendly during 2002 where Canada secured a 3-1 victory over Switzerland.

Canada 3.25

Verdict

This should be one of the most competitive matches of the final group round. Both teams sit on four points and have already shown attacking quality during the tournament. Canada arrive full of confidence after scoring six goals against Qatar, while Switzerland demonstrated their own firepower against Bosnia & Herzegovina. With first place in the group at stake, an open contest could be on the cards, and I see both sides beating the keeper.

BET: Both Teams to Score – Yes at 1.83
