South Africa head to Hamilton for the second match of the five-game T20I series on Tuesday, holding a 1–0 lead after a convincing win in the opener at Mount Maunganui. The Proteas chased down a modest target of 92 with ease, winning by seven wickets and with more than three overs to spare.
Despite that result the betting market still makes New Zealand favourites. With the hosts priced at 1.57 and South Africa available at 2.40 at the time of writing.

Series Recap – South Africa strike first
The opening match of the series turned into a low-scoring affair as South Africa’s bowlers dismantled the New Zealand batting lineup.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, New Zealand were bundled out for 91 in just 14.3 overs. The innings never recovered after early wickets saw the hosts slip to 21/4 inside four overs.
James Neesham (26) and Cole McConchie (15) were the only batters to offer meaningful resistance as the Proteas seamers controlled proceedings.
South Africa’s attack shared the wickets effectively:
- Nqobani Mokoena – 3/26 (Player of the Match on debut)
- Ottneil Baartman – 2/22
- Gerald Coetzee – 2/14
- Keshav Maharaj – 2/25
The chase was straightforward despite a few early wickets. Connor Esterhuizen anchored the innings with an unbeaten 45, guiding South Africa to 93/3 in 16.4 overs to give the visitors an early advantage in the in the 5 match series.
What to expect in Hamilton
The first match showed that this series may not necessarily produce the typical high-scoring T20 encounters. New Zealand’s batting unit looked fragile without several senior players and they will need a far better start if they are to square the series.
South Africa, meanwhile, will take confidence from the depth in their bowling attack. Their seamers made excellent use of the conditions in Mount Maunganui and if similar assistance is available in Hamilton the Proteas will again be dangerous.

Suggested Bets
Bet 1 – South Africa to win at 2.40
At odds of 2.40 the visitors represent the value. Their bowling attack has already exposed vulnerabilities in the New Zealand lineup and another disciplined performance could see them take a commanding 2–0 lead. I am surprised that the betting isn’t closer after the 1st T20.
Bet 2 – Top New Zealand Batter: Bevon Jacobs at 7.50
Jacobs did not make a major impact in the first game before he was run out but remains one of the more explosive options in the New Zealand lineup. With several senior batters absent he has a key middle-order role and could be the player most capable of accelerating if the hosts manage to build a platform.
Bet 3 – Top South Africa Bowler: Ottneil Baartman at 4.00
Baartman made an immediate impact in the opening match of the series, taking 2/22 and consistently troubling the New Zealand batters with his changes of pace and clever use of the short ball. The Black Caps top order looked vulnerable against seam in Mount Maunganui and if similar conditions are on offer in Hamilton he should again find assistance. Baartman also tends to operate at key phases of the innings where wickets are more likely, making the 4.00 available about him to be South Africa’s top wicket taker an appealing price.
