FA CUP 4TH ROUND PREVIEW

We look at three of the FA Cup Round of 16 fixtures taking place across Friday to Monday and suggest a bet in each game.

Let’s start with a look at the FA Cup outright betting where several Premier League heavyweights remain in the competition alongside a few sides hoping to make history.

Arsenal are favourites at 3.75 ahead of Man City at 5.00 and Liverpool and Chelsea are both 6.00. You can get 13.00 and better the balance.

WOLVES vs LIVERPOOL

Wolves booked their place in the Round of 16 after a convincing 6-1 victory over Shrewsbury earlier in the competition before edging past Grimsby 1-0 away from home. Their cup journey so far has been solid and they will be encouraged by their recent league form heading into this tie.

In the Premier League, Wolves have produced some competitive performances lately. They stunned Liverpool with a 2-1 victory earlier this week and also recorded a 2-0 home success against Aston Villa. They have proven difficult to break down at times, holding Arsenal to a 2-2 draw and earning a goalless stalemate away against Nottingham.

Liverpool reached this stage of the FA Cup after eliminating Barnsley with a 4-1 win and they followed it up with a 3-0 triumph over Brighton. Their attacking displays in the competition have been impressive and they arrive looking to bounce back after suffering a surprise 2-1 defeat to Wolves in their most recent league outing.

The Reds have otherwise been in decent domestic form, registering victories over Nottingham and Sunderland while producing a dominant 5-2 win against West Ham two fixtures ago. However, they have occasionally looked vulnerable defensively, as shown in losses to Bournemouth and Manchester City earlier this year.

Head-to-Head
Earlier this season the Reds recorded a 2-1 win at Anfield in December, although Wolves returned the favour with a 2-1 triumph in their most recent clash held just a few days ago.

Wolves 6.00
Draw 4.75
Liverpool 1.47

Verdict
Wolves showed in the midweek that they can trouble Liverpool, particularly on home soil. Liverpool remain the stronger side overall but Wolves’ current momentum suggests they can get on the scoresheet again in what could be a lively cup encounter.

NEWCASTLE vs MANCHESTER CITY

Newcastle progressed past the Round of 32 due to beating Bournemouth by penalty shootout after the game was drawn 3-3 when extra time came to a close, they then followed this up by producing an impressive 3-1 away win against Aston Villa in the previous round.

In terms of league action Newcastle have been inconsistent but remain capable of strong performances. They recently defeated Manchester United 2-1 at home and earlier claimed a valuable 2-1 away win against Tottenham. However, 3-2 and 2-1 defeats to Everton and Manchester City highlight the defensive issues that occasionally trouble them.

Manchester City comfortably advanced to this stage of the competition, thrashing Exeter 10-1 before overcoming Salford 2-0 at home. The side have once again looked formidable in cup competition as they do in the league as well.

City remain strong contenders in the league title race. They recently defeated Leeds 1-0 and recorded convincing wins over Fulham and Newcastle. Their most recent outing saw them draw 2-2 with Nottingham but as a whole they have maintained strong attacking numbers and defensive solidity.

Head-to-Head
Manchester City defeated Newcastle 2-1 in the league last month and also cruised past Newcastle in the EFL Cup earlier in the season with a 3-1 victory.

Newcastle 3.25
Draw 3.85
Manchester City 2.00

Verdict
Newcastle possess the attacking tools to trouble City, especially in front of their own supporters. However, City’s quality and experience in high-pressure knockout matches should prove decisive over the course of the 90 minutes.

BET: Manchester City to Win at 2.00

WEST HAM vs BRENTFORD

West Ham secured their place in the Round of 16 with a narrow 2-1 victory over QPR before edging Burton Albion 1-0 away from home, notably both matches resulted in draws after 90 minutes with West Ham being the only side to find the net in extra time to claim victory.

Their latest action domestically has been competitive. They come into this clash after a 1-0 away victory over Fulham in their latest travel and previously recorded wins against Sunderland and Tottenham. However, they also suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat to Liverpool last weekend which reflected some fragility at the back.

Brentford reached this stage of the tournament by beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 and then producing a professional 1-0 win away against Macclesfield. The Bees have been solid throughout their cup campaign and will be confident after keeping two clean sheets.

In league action Brentford have been capable of producing big results, including a thrilling 4-3 victory over Burnley on Saturday and an impressive away win against Newcastle a few weeks back. They also held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw, showing they can compete with stronger opposition.

Head-to-Head
Brentford have enjoyed the better of recent meetings, winning the last two encounters including a 2-0 victory at the London Stadium earlier this season. Matches between these sides have often been competitive and closely fought.

West Ham 2.90
Draw 3.50
Brentford 2.30

Verdict
This looks one of the more evenly balanced ties of the Round of 16. Both teams are capable going forward and recent meetings and form suggest Brentford have the edge in this matchup. With attacking threats on both sides, goals could feature as well.

BET: Result and Totals – Brentford and Over 1.5 Goals at 2.90
