We look at Wednesday’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg clash between Manchester City and Newcastle from a betting angle.
Arsenal beat Chelsea 4-2 on aggregate to book their spot against the winner of this fixture.
MANCHESTER CITY vs NEWCASTLE
Manchester City take a commanding position into the second leg after a dominant 2-0 victory at St James’ Park in the opening meeting. They controlled the tempo for long periods, showing their experience in knockout football and restricting Newcastle to very few sights at goal. Back at the Etihad they have been dominant in this competition and will be confident in securing their place in another final.
City have built their campaign on solid defensive foundations and clinical finishing. Across the tournament they have kept three clean sheets and scored freely, totalling in at 9 goals scored which underlines the balance within their squad.
Newcastle arrive with a mountain to climb and will need to be far more adventurous than they were in the first leg. They have enjoyed an impressive cup run, beating Tottenham 2-0 and Fulham 2-1 in the earlier rounds but they struggled to live with City’s control last time out. The team carry threat on the break although defensive lapses proved costly last time out.
Newcastle have scored 8 goals in the competition while conceding 4, and overturning a two-goal deficit on opposition soil will no doubt be a tough ask for them, especially as City are under no obligation to push forward.
Head-to-Head
The first leg finished 2-0 in favour of City while their latest meeting prior to this came in the Premier League in November where Newcastle edged the contest 2-1 on home soil. Before this they clashed twice in the league during the 2024/25 season where City claimed a 4-0 home triumph to follow up a draw in the reverse fixture.

Verdict
With a two-goal cushion and home advantage, Manchester City are in complete control of this second leg encounter. Newcastle will have to take an aggressive approach to try make up for their latest loss but I do not think they will deliver and I cannot see them finding the back of the net. I am expecting a disciplined performance from the hosts.
