Despite losing the opening match to DSG, MI Cape Town remain tournament favourites at 3.00 to defend their title. Durban’s Super Giants have been trimmed significantly after their opening win and are now 4.50 in the outright market, having opened at 8.50 prior to the tournament.
DSG v MICT – Match 1 Recap
These two sides met in the tournament opener on Friday in Cape Town, where MI Cape Town were firm 1.60 favourites in front of a packed Newlands crowd. Durban’s Super Giants, led by Aiden Markram, had other ideas.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, DSG produced a dominant batting display, piling up 232/5 from their 20 overs. Devon Conway and Kane Williamson laid the platform, racing to 96 in the ninth over before Williamson departed for 40. Conway went on to score 64 off 33 balls, while contributions of 20-plus from batters three through six ensured relentless pressure throughout the innings.
Trent Boult was the most economical MI Cape Town bowler, conceding around eight an over, while George Linde picked up 2 for 46 from his four overs.
In reply, MI Cape Town were immediately under pressure after Rassie van der Dussen fell cheaply. Ryan Rickelton, however, produced a superb innings, smashing 113 off 63 balls in a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful chase. MI Cape Town were always behind the required rate, and once Rickelton was dismissed with five balls remaining, the contest was effectively over. DSG secured a 15-run victory, with Eathan Bosch starring with the ball, claiming 4 wickets for 46 runs.

- Durban’s Super Giants: 2.10
- MI Cape Town: 1.80
MI Cape Town showed plenty of fight in the opener, but aside from Rickelton’s exceptional innings, they were largely outplayed. The market still appears to be giving the defending champions a fair amount of credit, and at current prices, Durban’s Super Giants look the value.
Suggested Bets
Bet: Durban’s Super Giants to Win @ 2.10
Given their performance in Cape Town and the move to home conditions at Kingsmead, I’m happy to side with DSG again at odds against.
Bet: Top MI Cape Town Bowler – Trent Boult (price to be confirmed)
Boult was tested early by Conway and Williamson in the opener but recovered well. Durban conditions should suit him, and as a genuine strike bowler, he is always a strong option in the top bowler market.
Bet: Top Durban’s Super Giants Wicket-Taker – Noor Ahmad @ 3.75
Ahmad had a mixed outing at Newlands but showed flashes of his wicket-taking threat. On a more spin-friendly surface, he looks well placed to make a big impact. I rate him highly and expect him to feature prominently throughout the season.
