Egypt opened their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe, a game where they fell behind in the 20th minute before equalising in the 64th minute and it was left to star striker, Mohamed Salah to bag the winner in the 1st minute of injury time.
South Africa played Angola in their opener and they took the lead in the 21st minute with Oswin Appollis opening the scoring. Angola hit back before the half-time break to level matters but South Africa grabbed the winner in the 79th minute, courtesy of Lyle Foster.
South Africa were only marginal favourites heading into the game and it was a valuable three points picked up ahead of their clash against group favourites, Egypt.
Head-to-Head
These sides last met in the African Nations Championship in March of 2025 with South Africa winning 3-1 in the second meeting after the sides had drawn 1-1 a week earlier. A somewhat surprising stat is that Egypt have not beaten South Africa in 6 matches dating back to November 2006.
Betting
Egypt 2.00
Draw 3.15
South Africa 4.25
Verdict
It looks to me as though the bookmakers are under-estimating South Africa slightly and they could be worth a bet at current odds of 4.25. I am going to take the more conservative route though and bet that they won’t lose the game by backing them in the Asian H’cap Market at +0.5 goals.
BET: Asian H’cap, South Africa +0.5 at 1.80
Other markets of interest in this game include Over 2.5 goals currently trading at 2.60. This would have arrived in both of the sides opening matches and at the time of writing, there has been a surprising trend of goals in this Tournament.
Both teams to find the back of the net is trading at 2.25 and would have also collected in both of their opening fixtures.
If I was going for a Correct Score punt here, the 1-1 draw would appeal at odds of 6.75.
There are plenty of other markets on offer as well as in-running action throughout the match.
