Bafana arrive at AFCON 2025 in strong form and with plenty of confidence. South Africa are unbeaten in their last 11 matches, having warmed up for the tournament with a 1–0 win over Ghana B followed by an impressive 3–1 victory against Zambia.
Their qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup was not without tension, but a decisive 3–0 home win over Rwanda proved enough to see them through as other results went their way. That experience appears to have added resilience to a side that has shown growing maturity and defensive discipline.
Angola, however, will provide a stern opening test. They were the last team to defeat South Africa, recording a 3–0 home win in June 2025, and have also enjoyed a productive build-up. They impressed with a 4–1 win over Mozambique and a 3–2 victory against Zambia as preparations ramped up.
Although Angola failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, both teams are viewed as lively outsiders for this AFCON and will see this opening fixture as a key opportunity in a group where progression is well within reach but Egypt are the big dogs.
Head-to-Head
South Africa and Angola have met 17 times across competitive and friendly fixtures.
- South Africa wins: 7
- Draws: 6
- Angola wins: 4
Recent meetings have been tight, with two of the last four encounters ending in draws, while Angola’s 3–0 home victory in June 2025 remains fresh in the memory.
Match Odds
- South Africa: 2.40
- Draw: 2.80
- Angola: 3.65
South Africa are narrow favourites, but the relatively short draw price reflects expectations of a competitive, possibly cagey Group B opener.
Betting Verdict
This has all the hallmarks of a tight, tactical opening match, with both sides aware that avoiding defeat is crucial in a group where the top two and potentially even third place, can progress to the round of 16.
South Africa’s unbeaten run and defensive structure make them difficult to oppose outright, but Angola’s recent head-to-head success and attacking confidence suggest they are capable of keeping this close.
