AUSTRALIA vs SOUTH AFRICA 1ST ODI SUMMARY:
South Africa
Proteas set the tone early on after being asked to bat first by putting up 296/8 in their 50 overs. The innings was anchored by a superb 82 from Aiden Markram (our Top SA bat pick) and consisted of 9 boundaries. He was ably supported by Ryan Rickelton’s 33 in an opening stand of 92 that gave the visitors a solid foundation. When Rickelton fell, captain Temba Bavuma took charge, adding 65 runs to the tally with Matthew Breetzke supporting him and ending on a total of 57, which was a partnership that kept Australia’s bowlers under pressure through the middle overs.
At one stage South Africa looked on course for 320-plus, but a quick burst from Travis Head, who claimed 4 for 57 across his 9 over spell, saw them lose 3 wickets for just 7 runs between the 40th and 41st overs. Wiaan Mulder’s composed 31 not out at the back end, however, pushed the total close to the 300 mark.
Australia
The Aussies began their chase aggressively, racing to put 60 on the scoreboard inside the first 7 overs through Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh. However, a sudden collapse followed after Heads dismissal as Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis and Alex Carey all departed cheaply in the space of just 26 balls, reducing Australia from 60/1 to 75/5 and leaving them in all sorts of trouble. From there, the innings never fully recovered although Marsh played a captain’s knock of 88 from 96 balls and, alongside Ben Dwarshuis who was caught on 33 runs, they added 71 for the seventh wicket partnership to briefly revive Australian hopes. This was until Marsh fell with the Aussie total on 174/8 and the two lower order batsmen left quickly folded, leaving them all out for 198 in the 41st over.
Keshav Maharaj was the star with ball in hand for the Proteas, returning remarkable match turning figures of 5 for 33 in his 10 overs, including four wickets in a decisive period that dismantled Australia’s middle order. Nandre Burger and Lungi Ngidi struck late to seal a 98-run win, giving South Africa a deserved 1-0 series lead.

I fancy Australia to level things up but they are a bit short for my pocket and I will look to the Top Bat markets.

SUGGESTED BETS:
Top South African Bowler – Keshav Maharaj at 3.40
Fresh from a match winning five-wicket haul, Maharaj’s accuracy and variations troubled Australia throughout the first ODI. If conditions again offer turn, has a strong chance to repeat his success.
Top Australian Batsman – Mitchell Marsh at 3.55
Marsh stood tall with a fighting 88 runs in the first match, showing composure under pressure while others fell around him. If Australia are to level the series, their captain will need to lead with the bat once again.
