We return for the third Major of the year—arguably the most challenging—as the field heads to Oakmont, one of the toughest courses in the world. Can Scheffler maintain his incredible run of form and capture another Major title, or will someone else rise to the occasion and lift the trophy? We look at this week’s action from a betting perspective, selecting 4 players to take on the bookmakers.
The Course
The U.S. Open will be played at Oakmont for the tenth time in the tournament’s history, with the last edition hosted there in 2016. The greens are larger than the tour average, but they’ll be rolling at blistering speeds. Fairways are narrow, and the rough is brutally thick—rewarding precision although power and length off the tee is still going to be important. To make matters more challenging, the course features 30,658 square meters (330,000 square feet) of bunkers. Oakmont will play at 6,741 meters (7,372 yards) this week.
Market Leaders
Scottie Scheffler is the heavy favourite to win this weekend and is trading at 3.80 while defending champion Bryson DeChambeau is on offer at 8.50. After a poor performance last weekend where he missed the cut in Canada, Rory McIlroy is trading at 13.00 for the win which is the same price you will get for Jon Rahm.

Selections:
Shane Lowry at 51.00
Shane Lowry often flies under the radar but consistently shines in major tournaments. In his last six PGA Tour starts, he’s notched two top-25 finishes, two top-15 finishes, and a runner-up result. At the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont, Lowry held a three-shot lead entering the final round but faltered, slipping down the leaderboard. With one Major title already to his name, he knows what it takes to triumph on the biggest stages. Hungry for redemption, Lowry returns to Oakmont determined to claim the victory that slipped away.
Suggested bet: Each way at 51.00.
Rory McIlroy at 13.00
Rory McIlroy has endured two consecutive subpar performances, but his U.S. Open record remains exceptional. After missing the cut for the third straight time in 2018, he has since achieved six consecutive top-10 finishes, each at least as strong as the previous year. In the last two years, he secured runner-up finishes, narrowly missing the title. His victory at the Masters this year demonstrates his ability to overcome mental hurdles. With this resilience and proven U.S. Open consistency, McIlroy is a strong contender to win at Oakmont this week.
Suggested bet: Each way at 13.00.
Ben Griffin at 76.00
Ben Griffin enters the U.S. Open at Oakmont in career-best form. Across his last six PGA Tour starts, he’s secured two victories, a runner-up, and an eighth-place finish. His runner-up result came in his most recent outing at the Memorial Tournament, where he challenged Scottie Scheffler in the final round but fell just short. If Griffin maintains this scintillating form, he has a strong chance to contend at Oakmont this week.
Suggested bet: Each way at 76.00 and a Top 10 finish at 6.00.
Our 4th and final selection will be posted on Wednesday
Matt Fitzpatrick at 101.00
Here is our final pick and I did not expect him to be in triple figures.
Fitzpatrick was the 2022 champion and he is a proven performer on tough golf courses. What catches my eye is his recent form and he seems to be getting back to his best. He was only T31 last week at the Memorial but he finished with a superb final round of -4. His penultimate start was a T8 in the PGA Champs and he was T23 at the Truist Championship. His form is not spectacular but it is solid and that is the type of golf that will be needed this week.
Suggested bet: Each way at 101.00 with a bigger play on a top 10 at 8.50
