THE COURSE
Mont Choisy Le Golf Course first hosted this event in 2022 and after a years break it is back again. It is a par 72 and a typical resort course designed for player enjoyment rather than to test the abilities of the top pros. The fairways are wide and players should largely be approaching the greens with short irons. One thing to look out for is the wind which can have a big impact on scoring.
Last time the Tournament was played here it was Antoine Rozner who won at -19. Length off the tee will be an advantage this week.
MARKET LEADERS
This is not the strongest of fields when compared to the Nedbank Challenge and Alfred Dunhill Championship of the last two weeks, however, we do have a few players who were in contention at Leopard Creek last week as well as some players who will be coming in a lot fresher, which may be an advantage as having 4 days in the Mpumalanga sun may well have drained players.
Antoine Rozner won this event in 2022 and he is priced at 9/1 for the win ahead of Angel Ayora at 16/1, who was very impressive last week at Leopard Creek, just fading down the stretch, having firmed to favourite at one point. John Parry also enjoyed an excellent Alfred Dunhill Championship and he is 20/1 and another man who was on the fringe of the contention last Sunday, Wenyi Ding is 22/1. You can get 25/1 and better the field.
Louis Oosthuizen, last year’s winner has not returned to defend his title.
SELECTIONS
Antoine Rozner each way at 9/1
I don’t usually back 9/1 shots in golf tournaments, but Rozner looks a very worthy favourite here. He is coming in fresh after a short rest but looked in great form before that with 2 Top 5’s and a Top 10 including a 3rd place finish at the DP World Tour Championship where I was on him at some decent each-way odds. As mentioned he won here in 2022 and not having played in the African sun last week could be an advantage
Angel Ayora each way at 16/1
I am not very original with this pick given I have already backed the favourite and Ayora is just behind him in the betting, but in a shallow field I could well see these two fighting it out for the title. Ayora hit the lead early in Round 4 at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, but his putter went cold on him and he finished 5th. Looking at his stats he finished 7th in driving distance, but was well down the field in terms of accuracy and I think he is going to benefit from the wider fairways this week. He makes his debut in the Mauritius Open.
Wilco Nienaber each way at 75/1
It is time to look further down the betting boards and I am backing Nienaber to thrive on this course with his length. He was the longest driver last week, although he only played 2 rounds at a course where wayward drives were heavily punished. That shouldn’t be the case this week and I am hoping he plays to his potential as the rest of his game seems in pretty decent shape. He never played this event in 2022 so we don’t have any course form to go on.
Lucas Bjerregaard each way at 100/1
Bjerregaard caught the eye with an excellent 3rd round last week and having been on him for a Top 20, I was disappointed to see him fade out on Sunday. This man was once touted for great things and it is good to see his game getting back in shape, but I am backing him purely on price here as he missed the cut at this course in 2022.
